Hello-
I am totally new to this process and am concerned about the background checks.

I had an issue about 7 years ago where I was in an emotional arguement with a friend who was out of the country. It was via e-mail and I said something that made him think I wanted to hurt myself when what I REALLY meant was that I wanted to end it with him. When he couldn't reach me, he got worried and called 911. They came and ended up taking me to the ER just to verify that everything was OK. The result was that I was told to be careful what I type in e-mail.

The question on the home study is Have you ever sought the help of a mental health professional. The answer is No and I confirmed with and adoption counselor that as long as I didn't set up meeting with a therapist or was instructed to then that answer is fine and I shouldn't bring it up.

My concern is whether a background check would identify this somehow. Can anyone provide advice? Will doing my own FBI and police clearances ahead of time give me peace of mind?

I don't want to hide something that should be addressed, but I also would Love to just forget about it. I never told anyone about all this (including my husband). It was just embarassing and I had just moved on and not thought about until now.

If you didn't look for help nor were ordered to get help then I believe things are fine. You are telling the truth and if your sw is comfortable with answering the question with a no I wouldn't worry about it. What would and FBI clearance find? They are looking into your background for criminal offenses I believe. A trip to and ER is not going to be put on your record. I could be wrong and someone else will be able to correct me. Thanks! Just totally paranoid. I don't want to complete the application incorrectly and have a social worker find something and think we are purposely hiding things.

as far as I know denice is right in the FBI background check the only look for criminal offence,an ERvisit doesnt show in that check. Good luck with what you doing,Susanne ps i have been adopted in germany

The only problem I could see happening is if you were placed under "protective custody" while you were transported to the hospital ER. Do you recall if the police said anything to that effect? That being said, the cops don't bother to fill out the paperwork half the time, even if the patient has been transported under PC status...
