I really don't have a very interesting story. I always wanted to be a mom, but never thought I would be any good at motherhood. One day I had a student who offered me her baby because she thought I'd be a good mom. She was young and single and scared. I helped her to figure out what she wanted to do (she kept her baby) but it made me think...maybe I could be a good mom. So I talked to Russell (my hubby) and we decided upon an international adoption from China. Paperchasing took awhile as I was going through the tenure process at the same time, but eventually we got it all together and were DTC and ultimately LID. We recieved our referral a month earlier than I expected. I was in Alaska directing a show and hubby was in KY. It was sad to not be together when seeing her face the first time, but it was so wonderful to finally know who she was. After many TA and consulate appointment delays we suffered the worst moment of our journey when we discovered our travel agent had cancelled our tickets to China 30 hours prior to our flight. (She had meant to cancel someone else!) In danger of not getting in China in time to recieve Lydia we took the looooooong route to China. Hopping planes for 40 hours, to make it in time to hold her for the first time. She never cried. My first words to here were, "Hi, You don't know me do you? I'm, mommy." She just studied me and I repeated over and over amazed at her, "You're doing so well." Lydia is the light of my life. I am in awe of her daily.
