Hi,

You haven't said how old you mum is or whether it was a Family Placement Team adoption (social workers) or an adoption agency adoption so here's a few of suggestions. If the adoption was through the social workers they will have their records and same with the adoption agency if it was through one. If it was through an adoption agency that no longer exists then the local social workers should be able to help or if you're not sure who dealt with it they should still be able to help.

Other lines of attack are www.norcap.org.uk which offers support, help with searches for adoption records etc and full membership is £50. Alternatively www.afteradoption.org.uk is a charitable organisation which doesn't charge for their services and they can help search for adoption records as well amongst other things. The phone number for After Adoption is 0800 0 568 578 and if your mother wants counselling about her adoption they will do this for free as well.

Hope this helps,

Montravia

Hi Kerryb,

In that case I would suggest trying After Adoption first, ring the number I gave in my previous post as it's a free number and explain the situation. I'm sure that if they can't help you initially they will point you in the right direction or alternatively ask to speak to the Family Placement Team (social workers) in your local area. Again explain the situation and it doesn't matter where your mum was adopted, all that matters is where she lives now and who adopted her.

I found both very helpful although for different reasons as I wanted to apply for copies of the adoption papers from my bsons adoption after we were reunited as he was asking questions. I couldn't remember initially what adoption agency (which no longer exists anyway) was involved but the social workers didn't need to know, though I was able to give that info after asking my bson.

Don't despair it isn't essential that you know who dealt with the adoption as both social workers and After Adoption have the power to find this out plus the beauty of it all is that all it costs you is telephone calls and a bit of time. Let me know how you get on and if I can help in any other way I will even if it is just support - it's great what you are doing for your mum.

Hugs,
Montravia

Kerry

There are several organisations who can help you search in England.

There is Barnardos and there is NORCAP (these 2 organisations search on your behalf or can advise you) http://www.norcap.org.uk/home.asp

There is an excellent organisation who can give you some advice called The Post Adoption Centre telephone: 020 7284 0555.

I hope that some of this info helps you.

good luck

Rowan

Barnardos in England (unlike in Scotland) will only help you if your adoption was arranged by Barnardos or one of the local authorities that contract post adoption work to it. Also Barnardos holds records for a few long defunct adoption societies and will help if your adoption was arranged by one them. Unless their policy has change recently they do not help those adopted through other agencies or privately.

Having been adopted through Barnardos myself and having had a great deal of trouble getting the truth out of Barnardos London, I'd say if you have a choice (some of us don't) then give them a wide berth. If you are lumbered with using 'Barnardo's Family Connections' at Barkingside, then their contact details are Barnardos Family Connections UK Cottage No. 1 Tanners Lane Barkingside ILFORD IG6 1QG Telephone: 020 8550 2688 Fax: 020 8551 8914

Email: familyconnections@barnardos.org.uk
