ideas for children left at home while traveling

For those of us traveling and leaving children behind, I thought it would be useful if some of you would share ideas for what we should do to make the separation easier. We will be leaving our 4 year old son with his godparents for 3 weeks. They are going to come and stay at our house. I would like some ideas on what we should do to make the time go by for him as quickly as it can.

Thanks, Jane

We purchased a picture frame that we were able to record a message and then placed a picture of ourselves. He could look and listen. I have also heard there are stuffed animals that you can record a message.

We also started very early on, letting our little one spend the night with the grandparents. We always referred to time spent at the grandparents house as going on vacation. He still "goes on vacation to grandma's house".

We did not take him to the airport to see us go.

We were able to call while we were gone. This was in 2002, so there may be more opportunity now for phone communication.

If your child understands the calendar, our 4 year old does, maybe make up a calendar he can mark off each day.

I read on another board that someone made up a gift bag with a little treat or gift in it with a note form mom and dad. She made up a bag for every day they would be gone so every night after dinner their child would open the bag. She would put stuff like a coloring book/crayons, silly putty, etc... I thought that was a nice idae.

Good Question!

Jane,
We also have a 2 1/2 year old son. I have asked our agency if we could take our son with us to Ukraine. They have not responded yet but I am hopeful. 3 weeks is a long time. Let me know if you come up with any good ideas. Good Luck.
Marlene

I have compiled a list of suggestions that I got from other peole that have left their children behind. Since they are others' suggestions, I would rather not post them here in a public forum, but I would be happy to send anyone these suggestions by pm if you like
