Of course, having re-read the dates, I see the adoption took place in 1996 - this would make the child only 8, which will make the search more difficult. Was the adoption an open or closed one? You will really need to speak to one of these agencies to get further advice as the adoptee is still a child...

I asume 1996 was typo, you mean 1966?

Have you contacted social services in the Shefield / south Yorkshire areas to see if they can be of any help? Sometimes SS departments are helpful sometimes not, you never know until you try.

http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sys_upl/...4191& tid=152

Also worth a try in that area

Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council
Email: social.services@doncaster.gov.uk
Social Services Department
PO Box 251
The Council House
College Road
Doncaster
South Yorkshire, DN1 3DA

Tel: 01302 737777
Fax: 01302 737778

Work in conjunction with Doncaster Adotion and Family Welfare Society and offer a wide range of adoption services including birth records counselling.

Searching for Nephew Born July 1966

I have contacted Sheffield Social Services, they sent me a letter saying if my step sister would write to them, they maybe able to give her non identifying information. Do I not have the right to search for my Nephew myself??

None of has any *right* to search for an adopted person under the current law in England & Wales.

From next September (I hope) you will be able to request an adoption support agency to undertake a search at your expense and ascertain his wishes with regard to contact.

But you say that your sister is your stepsister, are you a blood or half blood relative of this 'nephew'? If not you would probably need your stepsister's consent for them to do the search.

If he were your half sister's son rather than your step sister's so that you had a blood relationship that would give you more rights. The term step sister refers to someone who is your sister as the result only of a marriage by step parent to one of your parents, but who has not have any blood relationship to you. If she were in fact your half sister rather than your step sister you should make that clear to the agencies and social services that you ask to help you.

searching for nephew born 7/1966

Robin, after fiinding my own son, and meeting him, earlier this year, I do know better than to approach my nephew should I find him, without first finding out his wishes as I did with my son.

My sister, is my half sister, we have the same mother. Thank you for the advise and help. Any other ideas?
