Mississippi missed the end of the segregation in schools apparently...

I just read this article about a district in Mississippi segregating its classrooms. What world am I living in that this is still happening? I am just shocked that administrators needed a court to tell them this practice was wrong.

I live in Ms and have heard about this happening is smaller counties. That is sad that people are still acting that way.

Here's a closer look at what's going on in Mississippi. The comments from the school district employees and parents are interesting.

The CC students who didn't transfer were clustered in classrooms together in an attempt to prevent "white flight."

Thanks, Sleep. I don't know why people continue to shock me. I agree that this isn't only in the south, but I had always assumed the schools that were predominately black or white ended up that way just b/c of where people live. They were just going to their neighborhood school. But now with so many districts across the country doing "choice" programs, it could easily end up pre-1970's and maybe that is exactly what is happening. Well, that IS exactly what has happened in MS.

I believe NC is working towards reversing their desegregation rules.

Just notice the timing of the transfers. Things are okay for preschool and elementary school. People start getting weird in middle school and worry about their kids dating. I think that's the root of the transfers. They don't want their children dating outside their race.

The dating issue one thing I'm concerned about where I live. DH has a cousin who lives a few minutes from us and her DD attends the high school our kids will be attending. Her DD is a Junior and is not dating. She dated a junior in her freshman year and since then there are no dates... no prom. Her mom is okay with that because that's how high school was for her too. She said she was fine with her DD not dating because she has no distractions and could focus school and sports.

I'm not so comfy with the prospect of my kids not dating. I went to high school under similar circumstances and didn't start dating until after I graduated from high school. There was no one for me to date. Here we are in 2010 and the same thing is going on where I live now.

My DH kind of summed it up pretty well. The people who he thought were so open minded and accepting in high school have now turned into their parents. That's why this cycle continues.
