Fadzi, you mean "non-black!"

Well, I don't know what to think, but I did win a dance contest in college at a dance thrown by the Black student union. I should have...I was the best dancer that night! (This was about 60 lbs and 20 years ago!!)

For some reason, I don't know how I get sucked into "comments" on these things. This one made me howl:

"That chick on the right looks mad salty....LOL"

I'm scratching my head on this one. I get that it's a black college, but non-blacks are admitted too. They are also allowed to enter the pageants.

So....if they happen to win, that's a problem - how? The horse is already out of the barn at the stage of final judging in the competition.

Besides, why is it not considered discriminatory if she is considered "not fit to reign", just because of her skin color? If she were a very light-skinned black woman, would that make a difference?

Oh, and Karen, those comments crack me up LOL!

I also remember not too long ago seeing a story about a CC guy being voted valedictorian at Morehouse College. I thought that was a nice story.

It's true. Black folks know what it's like to be discriminated against. and it's no secret that HBCU's have been admitting non-blacks for awhile. We have to stop complaining..

Yes it was a Morehouse chap, nice guy too.

I heard the buzz about this yesterday, and the thoughts were mixed. However, who voted for her?

Supamodel & Nickchris;

I remember the Morehouse guy too.

Sabaglio:

Even if the homecoming queen was very light skinned there wouldn't have been a "fuss", we come in all colors. In fact, 40 years ago a very light home coming queen was the "normal" at HBCU's.

I can see how this is ripe for controversy just b/c its based on a woman's "beauty". Which is why I absolutely hate hate hate pagents. I'm not an AA woman, but its seems that society in general values lighter-skinned women as being prettier (total crap but whatever). So, I imagine that's why the AA women are upset; just seems to fit society's sterotype.
BUT, just b/c its a traditionally black college does not mean that a non-AA shouldn't hold this title. Total hypocrisy... I know this is OT but they don't have pagents for men, why women? Why do we allow women to continue to be objectified like this? Drives me insane.

I'm not sure how the voting took place. Historically black colleges are not all black... They've always had people of other races there. Certain HBCU's focus on enrolling students who are the first in their family to go to college.

Black campus queens have changed since I was in college. I didn't attend a HBCU but I knew how things were done. There was a shift at a certain point to qualifications over beauty. I certainly hope we aren't going back to looks only again. FWIW she looks like the campus queens from back in the day. Very light and long hair....

The comments are always a hoot.
Here's a comment that caught my eye and made perfect sense...

Quote:
When I saw the that Nikol won I was suprised, but I supported her. Then when I read the letter she wrote to President Obama and it changed my perception of her. I was embarrased. Now when I read an article like this, I see how easy it is for people to report things they know absolutely nothing about. I was there when Nikol was crowned and I saw that the crowd was suprised. Her own mother looked suprised. I was suprised because she didn't do well in the competition AT ALL. Her dress was not classy, her walk was not appropriate, ahe didn't have the highest GPA, ahe had no real community service, she never contributed to the campus, no one knows her (or have they seen her), she wasn't articulate, etc. She just isn't a young lady that should have won regardless of her skin tone. The only positive thing that I can say is that she is a beautiful girl. I thought initially thought the idea of her being Miss HU was cool because it was different.
The real story is this, she was upset because a small number of students voiced there opinion about how she wasn't qualfied (GPA, community service, professionalism, campus invovlement, etc) and she got upset and pulled the infamous race card. Instead of addressing the student body and introducing herself to the student body(remember no one knew her), she jumps the chain of command and tries to "tattle tail" to President Obama. If anything she made is worse on herself because now the world thinks that Hampton University is a racist institution and that is not true at all! (Hampton University was the very same institution that welcomed Native Americans to join in the HU experience years ago.) The modern purpose of HBCUs are to promote African American students and to celebrate our culture and history. Nikol obviously has no idea what HU is all about. People would have eventually learned to embrace her if she would have simply given them time to. She jumped the gun
If President Obama writes her back he should tell her that when your a public figure people are not always going to like you. She took it too far by putting the business of HU on front street! At the time of her letter she was Miss HU, meaning she was the spokesperson for the institution and she had already won. SHe should have used the little criticism that she got to motivate her to become a true HAMPTONIAN. Also, note that the Mr. Pirate (MR.HU) is Asian, but no one was in an uproar because he was qualified!

Excuse my errors. I was typing in a hurry.

I want to make sure it's known that the male winner (Mr. Hampton) was Asian and nothing was said because he was qualified.
