I understood what you meant Supa. For a good while, I frequented a salon in Manhattan, many stylists available, but I caved, and had the gay AA guy style my hair. Double assumption there. lol But he was goooood, hair that shined, and bounced. :-D
Just breaking it down further. Its not right to assume, but it is also about exposure, and the probability. Got to have the hours/ experience/talent to touch my hair, or my boys hairline. :-)

Slighty OT but here's something crazy. In beauty school an older AA woman wouldn't let me do her hair because she said that she only let men do her hair because they will grow it and women don't. WTF?

ps.. I LOVE the shined and bounced line!! I always tell the girl who does my hair to make sure she get those edges straight! I wanna look indian! Hahaha ....lol

The gender assumption is weird, did she explain why?

LOL yes girl, the hair looked fab, and I knew I was cute, as I walked to Macy's to shop. Ah the single days. :-)

She said something about men will grow your hair and women don't. I think its an old wives tale but it sounds pretty ridiculous to me.

Oh my people. How in the world am I now stereotyping people? My sister is a hair stylist for goodness sakes. When she did my son's hair. She did what MOST white people do to white hair. They shave it all down with the clippers and that's it. MOST CC people don't cut AA boys/mens hair and they think that doing black hair is the same as doing white hair.

Never did I say that I looked at a white person and assumed that he or she could not cut black hair. In fact I let my sister try. Then I even went into a white hair salon as I mentioned and let them try. But guess what? They cut my son's hair like they cut CC boys hair and it's not the same. If you are black you know what I mean.

When CC people cut hair like that, they take the buzzers and they are done in two minutes flat. At the black barber shop it takes my barber at least 15 to 20 minutes for his fade and line up. He is very careful using both scissors and buzzers and then doing the edges.

If I knew of a CC barber who could cut black hair, I would certainly go to them. However, as I said, being a transracial family, I want my son to be around other AA males as much as possible. And as many of you know, going to a black barber shop is an experience. It has taken me about four years to get comfy enough with "the guys" to actually get into their little debates and such. Just had a good one about Giants player Plaxico Buress yesterday when I cut my son's hair cut.

You too!! To get in good early, I told the boys barbers that I have a veteran barber in the family. LOL

The other observation, who would think that men talked so much?

When I quoted you it was because I was AGREEING with you! I did not say that YOU were sterotyping anyone.

My ps was to everyone in GENERAL nothing AT ALL directed towards you.

ps - I also do want to add that a good CC person could do just as good as a job too. I'm AA and a hairstylist who worked in NYC in a VERY highend salon where my clients were 99% CC. I would hate for them to see a black girl and say I dont want her doing my hair but she not use to it. I also have a CC friend that's a barber and he's amaing with AA hair so I just wanted to throw that out there
Oh, I know! By "AA barber shop" I meant "a barber shop that caters to AA men and has experience with black hair", as opposed to a generic barber shop that might not have anyone experienced with black hair. Although yes, I am wanting the added side benefit of being around AA men and boys. It doesn't really matter the color of the stylist.

Just making sure everyone was clear on my statement.

I also wanted to add that when I was looking for a barber, I looked in the phone book and called barber shops asking if they cut AA hair. ALL of them said, "uh, yeah." Now I know that when I call a shop and ask them that, I will ask more specifics. Do you have experience cutting AA hair? Do you know how to do fades and line it up in the front? If they don't know the language than I'll know they truly don't know what I mean.

BTW, I found the barber shop I go to now because of the name. They are called Soul Barber Shop. I told the guy that I had been looking for a black barber shop and that their name is what tipped me off. We both laughed.

My former barber shop was called "Africutz". That was a no brainer.

Too funny. This thread has me thinking of the movie terms; Soul Glo, juice and berries.

Oh man, do they talk. They have some good debates. There is always one guy who gets so upset over a topic. LOL! I have been listening and watching for some time. Didn't want to overstep my bounds. The first few times I went in with my DS, I had the whole shop scratching their heads. LOL!

The other day I laughed out loud at one of the guys comments and he actually looked at me and started laughing that I got the joke. That is when I eased in a bit since I happen to know a little about the Giants - my favorite football team, and Plaxico Burress.

When I do it myself I use both an electric clipper and also an edger. The clipper will burn the scalp if you try to edge with it.

In the kitchen

I do it myself...just bought new clippers even. I even do DH in a typical men's cut. He grew up with his Mom cutting his hair and says it's way better when I do it cause I don't say, "Oh shoot!" half way through (but not shoot...you get it!)...I typically do Ty's all one length, but his last cut was with no guard on sides, and 1/4 on the top. Like Shannon said of David...it was about 2 weeks ago, and it's already grown out and forming it's little pin curls. I basically just cut it whenever it seems like he's in a good mood, I have a few minutes to spare, Matty is sleeping, and it seems like it's curling into knots when I'm brushing it. I think I'll grow it out to 1/2 an inch this time. He loves sitting on the bathroom counter, I put a few inches of water in the sink for him to splash his feet in and he plays in that, and makes faces in the mirror.
