OT: Nice hair accessories for kids?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any suggestions about where I can buy some nice hair accessories for our DD? Sally's Beauty Supply had some cheapo plastic barrettes, and the ones from CVS were pretty bad as well. I'm looking for soft barrettes that I can put use to keep a few hanging braids intact (assuming she doesn't pull them out, which she is wont to do). Her hair is too fine/smooth to use the elastics (they just slide off). Shall I try Target? There's one near our place. Any suggestions?

Thank you much!

Walmart and Target both have things for thin hair. Have you considered snaps at all? They seem like they are almost impossible for little ones to get out. You can check snapaholics for those. I"m not sure where you can find soft things that will also stay on a hanging braid though...

Thanks, aclee. I guess i meant something like a snap or barrette for the part that attaches to the hair, but a soft decorative part on the other side. Am I totally confusing you?? I've seen a few kids with these funky barrettes/snaps/not sure what they're called...I should have asked their parents. I use the regular barrettes when I weigh her hair down making water curls or before a braid-out, but she doesn't go out with them (they look too cheap LOL!).

You have to go to the black beauty supply store for that kind of stuff. My DD has 4 fishing tackle boxes full of barrettes, bows and clips.

We got a huge set of velcro barrettes... a barrette with a folded strip of velcro to hold it. Would these work for your purposes? We got all the types of barrettes they have as well as the big set of tiny plastic bands for ponytails at target but they don't have a lot... walmart has a slightly different selection. I keep checking to see if they get new ones but they don't seem to change them a lot.
A good place for hair accessories is Claire's in the mall and they are fairly inexpensive. Also icing. I bought some stuff at biglots and dollar general as well.
(I like the tackle box idea or even a tool box... she's got several shoe boxes of headbands, barrettes, ponytail holders etc and they are a mess!)
Addendum: I think the hair ties we use for A might work for your dd because they are so small... they are basically for one use only but they come in a big multipack. They are stretchy plastic and about 2 mm thick and 1.5 cm in diameter.

Walmart and Target have the same stuff all the time... They might change a few items as the seasons change. The BBS (black beauty supply) that I go to has something different every single time I go and the barrettes and pony holders are only $1 a package or less. The BBS stores around here cater to AA's and Hispanics. I make a trip to the store probably once a month because DD loses hair bows or barrettes all the time.

The tackle box is a necessity for organization. All her hair stuff is organized by color. My mom used to keep our stuff in plastic bags so we always had to fish for matching pieces. With the tackle box you can open it and make a quick glance to see if you have the right color or enough of a particular barrette to use.

A tip that I learned with DD. DD's hair was very thin so barrettes would not stay in her hair. She was almost 2 years old before she had enough texture to hold them. A shop I went to made bows and they used textured shelf liner... the kind with the holes in it... glued that to the barrette or bow so it didn't slip out of DD's hair. That was a very inexpensive fix because I wasn't going to spend money on the velco bows and I think they take out too much hair.

Thanks, all. I started off at Sally's, which I thought was a BBS, but I guess not lol! I just came back from Gigi's Beauty Supply, and they had a large selection of snaps and barrettes. Not the exact kind I was looking for, but not bad. I'll try Target too, and look online.

I need to try those velcro ones, oceanica! Sounds like they might just work. Your solution also sounds great, sleeplvr.

One section of a store does not make a BBS store. LOL!
You will know a BBS store when you step into one...product overload. They usually have just about every low to mid range product known to man for AA's and Latino's. The goal is to pack product into every square inch of the store. Let me see if I can squeeze through this aisle. You usually can't even see in the windows because they are covered with shelves and product. They always sell wigs and weave or braiding hair. The BBS are usually owned by Koreans... I think that's because most of the product is made in Korea.
I live in the burbs outside Atlanta and there are a couple in my neck of the woods.

I found them!

I finally found some accessories that I like! In K-Mart, of all places. I was buying some Pampers there this evening, and happened upon some hair accessories.

They are from a K-Mart line called "Small Wonders". The designs are lovely, and they are made of ribbon and soft materials. I found barrettes and snaps, and they look really nice

I found some amazingly cute hair bows and clips on the website Etsy.com. Of course you have to pay for shipping. Some of the cute ones I got were made of felt with a metal clip sewn inside. Some of them were saying they were for baby fine hair and used velcro. I got one that was personalized w/DD's name.
