Voting here to say you both did very well! I literally gasped when reading your post. I'm not sure I could have kept my cool, but rather would have stumbled like some idiot in trying to find the words as some sort of come-back.
I agree with Quesita though........the poison he possesses will stay forever........ Glad you had a good time on your vacation anyway! Sincerely, Linny |

Sugar& Spice:
Unfortunately you encountered someone who is bitter and, not to rain on your parade, it may happen again. A lot of people tend to think that we ( black folks) aren't prejudice because of racism being directed at us. However, we can be just as prejudice as any other racial group. Because you are a transracial family people will notice . It's no different then when you see a black woman with a visibly mixed-race child. I'm sure she has had people make comments about "selling-out" and what not. My advice to you would be to grow a " thick skin" and enjoy our life and beautiful family. I wish you the best, -Manni ![]() Last edited by manni28 : 06-24-2009 at 01:10 AM. |

What a great line! It is scary that someone would be so bold. I am really impressed with your courage. Fighting ignorance is always difficult.

Thanks everyone for your support! I just wanted vent about that situation because it bothered me throughout our plane ride to Oakland and back.
Although we live in the South, we have NEVER experienced outright racism because we went the extra mile to live in a large LGBT neighborhood and a diverse one. Hopefully, this story won't discourage anyone who is considering moving here to look elsewhere. Oceanica: Growing up, I lived near relatives who loved to drink and party. I also used to party in my early 20's in college. Therefore, I know the smell of cheap alcohol. ![]()

It's always shocking to realize there's that much hatred and rudeness in the world. Once my husband and I were talking with a friend who's in a same sex relationship on the NYC subway. When a guy sitting across from us realized that we were talking about her female partner, he got up and started yelling at us about how "sick" it was and how we should all be ashamed. He kept yelling till we got off the train (happily it was almost our stop). I've also seen people on the train talking about the "F**king Jews," etc.
You were amazing - you should be very proud of how you and your family handled yourselves.

Holy wow - that's just incredible! Talk about the complete bigot, could there have been any other angle to which he could have insulted your family?
And that's just it - you do not comply with his standard of what a family should look like. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Hang in there! Blessings, -Greg |

I'm so sorry you had to deal with this, but it sounds like you did an amazing job standing up for your family. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have said anything and would have just cried instead - your reaction is much better. Good for you!
![]() It's funny - DH, DD, and I all went to our local PrideFest last weekend with my sister and her partner (DD's godparents). After we'd been there a while, my sister looked at the sidewalk near the entrance and said, "Oh goody, the protesters are here." We left before them and I got myself all fired up to confront the protesters. Imagine my surprise when I saw they were protesting in FAVOR of the LGBT community (they were from PFLAG). My sister will probably never live that one down!

Sorry about that bad experience but racists come in all colors. My mom always said that people of color should know better than to take part in that but some still do. They've usually had a pretty crappy life and have internalized what has been thrown at them and then turn around and spit it right back out.
The worst racist comments I've dealt with have been from drunks. Alcohol helps people shed that veneer of civility. Anywho... you are right about the South being a good place to live. My husband says the hardcore racists are getting pushed further and further up into the mountains or out in the country. The only place you come into contact with them on a regular basis in the Atlanta area is places like the airport or the major hospitals. |
