Please Help--Looking for Books

We've been looking and looking for the right book on transracial adoption. We've come across many books on transracial adoption, but they focus on transracial adoption between CC and AA or CC and other ethnic groups. DH and I are both Asian American (though different ethnicities) and DS is AA. We'd love to read, learn, and hear about families and experiences like our's.

Thanks!

C, have you ever looked on tapestry (or is it tapestry books dot com)? They seem to have "every" adoption book that there is!! But you are right...the ones I have seen always seem to focus on whites adopting outside of their race.

Good luck! Hope you find a good resource.

Have you seen "A Mother for Choco"? That is, if you're looking for a book to help explain it to your child. The illustrations are all animals, so no human skin color or race at all.

Another good one is "Horace" by Holly Keller. It's about a leopard adopted by a family of tigers. She's also written other books about Horace. The 1st one is an adoption story & the others are of Horace doing typical kid things.

Just the one I was going to suggest! Horace is really good too. Like you cele, there aren't really any specific to us. There aren't a lot of books for CC parents of NA children.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I did look on tapestry.com and didn't see what we're looking for. I'm not looking for children's book, but I'm looking to read/learn about transracial adoptions that are not CC involved, since DH, me, or DS are not CC.

I've found a lot of books, essays, stories, experiences from AA, Asian, Indian, and/or Hispanic adult adoptees adopted by CC's, but can't find any literature where the parents are not CC. A lot of the transracial adoption books for parents focus on white privilege and how the adoptive parents may not be able to help their children understand racism...again, this does not apply to my family.

Two books my DD likes that do not specifically talk about transracial adoption, but relate to acceptance of all different kinds of people in the world:

Sesame Street We're Different We're the Same
and
Whoever You Are

Try contacting Pact. They should be able to give you some information or at least point you in the right direction.

Welcome to Pact, An Adoption Alliance

DH and I are AA and our DD is Black/Asian. We have also fostered Hispanic kids and how you relate is different but not so different. The added level of CC privilege is missing in transracial adoptions where the adoptive parent is of color and the children are of color…. Meaning the learning curve shouldn't be as steep because you are coming from a similar vantage point.

I'm not even sure there are any books like that out there because for the most part people who adopt outside of their race are CC. Hmmm...maybe you can be the first to write one...seriously. I don't know if you're into writing at all, but it would be great having a book like that written from someone with firsthand experience. I believe transracial adoption for couples other than CC's is on the rise and books like that are needed.

Okay...am I crazy or what? I've been PM-ing with another member about this and I am seriously considering writing a book. This obviously is still VERY premature as I have NO clue what is involved in having a book published.

I'm not necessarily looking to educate others or write some philosphical, educational, theoretical book...maybe a compliation of essays from parents and adult children involved in transracial adoptions beyond Black & White. Any thoughts, opinions, suggestions???

No, you're not crazy. It's a great idea! A compilation of essays would be great. You'd just have to find the non CC people out there who've adopted outside their race. If so, the next thing would be locating them. Were you looking at Asians specifically or any non CC race who've adopted outside their own race?

Another idea (my favorite) is to write a memoir of your personal journey into adopting your son and how you came about adopting a baby outside of your race. Others would be impacted by it, especially others considering adopting outside their race. I wouldn't worry too much about publishing the book at this point. If you write it there are all kinds of ways to go about that. Feel free to pm me if you want to chat more about it.

Count me in, Cele! I'm something of a writer myself, so I'd love to contribute if you're looking to compile a collection of essays.
