do some bi-racial baby's skin look white?

We adopted our son, who is now 1 month old and were told that he was bi-racial (black/white). The mother would never say anything about the father, other than he was black. I am wondering about this because my son's skin is lighter than mine (me being cc). Is this possible with aa/cc babies.

My doctor said that he looked full cc.

Just curious what other family's aa/cc looked like.

thanks

Jen

Genetics is 100% random and therefore your child could look full Caucasian, racial ambiguous or full African American.

Don't believe that myth that some Blacks like to spread-that your child's skin will get darker and his hair will turn nappy. For some children this is a reality but for others its not.

These pictures right here are some of the reasons I do not believe in the "one drop rule".

Here are some pictures of Biracial (AA/CC) kids who look white.

NOTE: in the 3 picture the mother is Biracial.

My son is full AA, but has a fairly light complexion. He is probably pretty much the color that he was at birth....I wish I had pix to post...sorry. (His hair did grow in kinky, though)

All children mixed with Black don't necessarily have to look Black, (as in dark, or darkened skin). Black Americans come in a great variety of colors. Perhaps the Black Birth Parent and/or family members were on the lighter side of the spectrum, or perhaps they were mixed themselves, as so many Black Americans are, or maybe the baby took coloring after their White side of the family.

Comment: One of the pictures in the post showing "biracial" familes is of Soledad O'Brien and her children. Soledad is Afro Hispanic, (African, Indian, Hispanic), and her husband is White, this may make her children more "tri" than "bi." This color stuff is ridiculous, who cares!!! Love your baby!!!

My biracial son was very light at birth. Everyone told me he would continue to darken the firts year. When he had not by age 1, everyone said, it could take a couple years. He is now 2 1/2 and still very light (my CC husband is darker) and his hair is so light, it is blond in the summer. So, he may not ever look AA.

We have chosen to believe bmom that dad is AA. (They were engaged at the time and have since gotten married, so it sounds like a sure thing.) So, we will be raising Cameron knowing he is both CC and AA.

I think you can do some kind of DNA testing that would determine for sure. (I think I heard that somewhere.) Personally, I would just choose to believe her and raise him as a biracial child.

Here's the company I used for my DD's testing.
All it did was confirm that she is African, Asian and Caucasian. But in the case of your child... if his father is black it will definitely tell you the truth no matter what he looks like since his mom is CC.

It's a good test IMO if you don't know much to start with....but some people don't care for it because it tends to open a can of worms and gives you more questions to ask. My test results did open a can of worms and I had to go back and look at my grandparents with new eyes.

AncestryByDNA

The darkening thing relates to cuticles and ears. Kids will typically match those areas eventually. My DS changed to match his... my DD's didn't have to change because she was already the color of her ears and cuticles.

Pardon, your original posting indicated you were questioning his coloring and not his ethnicity, (you said you knew he was Black/White). So sorry if I misunderstood.

I dont see why you are upset. She asked a legit question. Who cares the meaning behind it, race of ethnicity. It was an honest question.

My nephew is biracial. His dad is AA and his mom (my sister) is white. My nephews are as light as snow. One with blonde curly hair the other with light brown hair. Kids just come out "all the colors of the rainbow!"

Your son is cute BTW

Not sure to whom you are speaking. If to me, then I am not upset. The baby is beautiful and my original response was in agreement with you, who cares about race/ethnicity, enjoy the baby.

My son looked white at birth and didn't darken up for several months. That is quite normal, I think.

ETA: Congratulations! What a gorgeous baby, and quite a cutie pie in your avatar, too.

Just my opinion...

I am AA and my husband is CC and we have two BR sons. We do have a lot of mixed race people on both sides of our family. Most of our BR relatives are light tan in skin color, but a few are very pale. In my family, typically BR relatives, even those that remain very light skinned did not have the same skin color of a full CC baby. For example, my nephew who looked "white" as a child and can still easily "pass" as an italian, lacked the pearly/pinkish color of a full CC baby(his "white" skin was more opaque). As an infant you would think he was white until he was placd next to a CC baby(he was and still is lighter than his mom, full CC.) I know that may sound weird, but that is my experience.

Genetics are funny though b/c my kids were very dark at birth (they looked full AA )and at 6mths their compexion completly changed. I will post pictures if I can figure out how. The change is acually quite dramtic and atpyical.... Now people constantly think they are hispanic-oh well!
