This might be of interest to you. Apparently black and white don't always "mix" in DNA the way they do in art.

We have 3 biracial children. Our son looks more Hispanic, then AA, mostly because he is light-skinned with wavy, black hair. One of our daughters is AA/Italian and looks more "black" and our other daughter is very fair and light-skinned.
We also have two biracial grandchildren (genetically, not adopted). One is very fine-featured with brown skin and silky hair. Her sister (different fathers, but both AA) is VERY light-skinned and very CC looking but definitely a black child. You'll see so many variations in skin color when races come together and it's all so beautiful. Celebrating who our children ARE rather than who they look like, can be difficult in our society because everyone wants to know "what" we are. In the case of your son, it will be up to you to be sure he knows and is proud of all sides of himself. I'm sure you'll do beautifully. That's why we're all here. Hugs, Josie

I know I'm late on this but I've been off of here for a few days. As soon as I saw the picture of your son I could tell he was at least biracial.
Our DD is Biracial and until she was about 18 months old or so, when her hair came in "coarser" could you even tell she was biracial. Our son who is full AA is actually lighter in skin color then our biracial DD. Our DD has 3 other siblings...all with different "shades". And all 4 of the siblings also have different hair color and texture, all the same set of parents. Our youngest DD is AA/Japanese. She is dark, you'd never know she was part Japanese. I attached a few pictures...ones that I could find quickly on the computer. Of various ages of the kids. It's very normal for biracial children and even AA children to have light skin color in the first year. I remember when our youngest DD was a few weeks old. I sent her Birth mom some pictures and she said to me,"WOW!! Her color came in fast!" One other poster mentioned looking at his cuticles and tips of his ears. That has been true for our kids. Deb

Gorgeous, :-) Your DD who is AA/Japanese has a similar look as Tyson Beckford (part Asian lineage) who has similar eyes.

Congratulations on your new little one!!!
Biracial, multiracial, Hispanic and black children--come out in so many colors- from dark to white. You can't really tell people's racial background anymore. There's nothing abnormal about your biracial child having white skin. This is very common. |

Deb, all of your children are really gorgeous!!!
Jo, that is so true...I hate when people say, "What is she?" She's a flipping human, you moron. It wouldn't be so bad if they at least asked, "what race/ethnicity is she." ack!! We have been "told" that DD looks Polynesian, Puerto Rican and numerous other things. Her ped even said "No, she isn't!" when we told her she was biracial. All I know is that she is a beautiful and special girl. The only people who seem to recognize that she is black are black people. Btw, I also kind of find that story about the twins annoying. They are not "black" and "white." They are both. Why is is so "strange" that one kid happens to be darker than the other twin? I did learn something interesting though...of like the 30,000 genes that determine what one looks like, skin color is only like 2 or 3 of them. To the OP, your son is beautiful! Enjoy him! |

My adopted daughter was really light as an infant also. She has only gotten a little darker, and she is almost 2 now. She started with straight hair, and it is really curly now. My Granddaughter is biracial, she has always been fairly dark, and her hair still just has a slight wave to it. You really never can tell for sure what will change and when. LOL The steady constant for my adopted baby has been her mongolian spot, a huge blue spot that covers her entire rear, and blue specks traveling up her back and onto her shoulders. She scared the life out of an intern at the hospital one time. heehee They look like huge bruises except for the fact they are a solid color, and they haven't changed in almost two years now. GRRRRR LOL My granddaughter also has one, but just about the size of a quarter at the top of her little bottom. I am attaching pics of my baby, when she was a couple weeks old, and just this past December. Yes, I could also tell as soon as I saw the pic of your baby that they are biracial.

People are bewildered at how different-looking my girls are though, especially about the hair.

Joining the conversation late... but I wanted to thank Sleeplvr for this link! My beautiful daughter is Mayan, (as is her birth mother) and she has very strong Mayan facial features. However, her bodytype is NOT typical of Mayan people. She is tall and slender, unlike the typical sort of short thick look that most children her age who are of indigenous ancestry have. Her skin is also somewhat darker than most indigenous people from Central/South America. I often wonder if she has some Garifuna blood... on her birth father's side. Garifuna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Her body type seems so much more like the Garifuna people than the Mayans. I plan to ensure that my daughter understands, and is proud of her indigenous ancestry. However, if she also has Garifuna ancestry, I really feel an obligation to introduce her to connection to this very very small group of people who have such a rich and unique history. I know about mitochondrial (sp???) dna... and I was under the impression that you could only test ethnicity along the maternal line, which I am sure is all Mayan. I would love to do a test, and see if my beautiful daughter also has connections to the Garifuna world. So thanks for the link!!!!

Hey Questia! Nice to see you here. We're going to do this one with Julian. I'll let you know how it goes. ![]() https://genographic.nationalgeograph...hic/index.html edited to add this project re: maternal vs paternal lines About the Test With a simple and painless cheek swab you can sample your own DNA and submit it to the lab. We run ONE test per participation kit. We will test either your mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down each generation from mother to child and reveals your direct maternal ancestry; or your Y chromosome (males only), which is passed down from father to son and reveals your direct paternal ancestry. You choose which test you would like administered.

I did the MtDNA test on myself and the yDNA test on my DH. We now have a specific country in Africa we can point to.
I did the testing through Family Tree DNA and transferred the results to the National Geographic Project. I did it that way so I could get matches with unknown relatives through Family Tree DNA. I have one exact high resolution match so she's definitely a relative but we just can't figure out how. |
