Dry Scalp Help

Hi, my daughter is getting dry scalp and I was wondering what anyone else has used for that? She is a little over 2 months old.

I once thought my son had a dry scalp - in fact my black friend told me that's what it was... 2 months later when my son and I had these strange things on our faces, head, and arms we found out it was RING WORM which is very contagious and can be picked up at day care, school, etc.

SO check to make sure that's not what it is.

BUT after that - Sulfer8 is a medicated product that many grocery stores sell (white jar with a yellow label and lid).... If you have ethnic hair stores near you just go in and ask for help

Sulpher 8 is very strong and may not be appropriate for a 2 month old. In fact, I would not use it on a baby at all. It burns me and I am an overgrown woman. It could be craddle cap, so it might be best to have a visit to the pediatrician just to make sure it's not. Ring worms are circles, and usually the hair will fall away from the circle, so again, a visit to the pediatrician is encouraged.

Also, ring worm is not normally limited to AA, but it is very contagious. I hope that it's not, but it is treatable. Keep us posted on the outcome.

*If you are pretty sure it's not the above, then do a search on these boards, and you will come up with a wealth of what to use on my Transracial, AA, etc., child's hair.

as a black woman my first thought is you may be washing the baby's hair to often. I know that if I wash my hair too often for whatever reason my scalp gets really dry. I would not recommend medicated shampoo on an infant but do agree with the others who suggest possibly consulting her doctor.

My first thought would be washing the hair too often too. And, I have to say, when we had our youngest at that age, I felt 'so fortunate that we weren't dealing with cradle cap---ever'....UNTIL one afternnon while in town, mind you, I noticed these dry looking scales mixed within his gorgeous hair. (Thick very curly hair) As I kept 'flicking' it out, it seemed that more came about........and THEN, I realized it was this thick, scaley stuff and KNEW then, it was cradle cap.
I ended up using a soft medicated type shampoo (I think that's what I used...been a couple of years ago).....and no more than a couple of uses, it was gone. I was also careful not to put too much oil on his hair, and kept close watch on it.

I doubt that it's ringworm....though, I suppose it could be. As someone posted above, ringworm (not a worm at all, but a fungus) is VERY contagious...and grows in circles in 'patches' if you will. It also can be sore and itchy as I remember. (We've had it---but not on the scalp, on the arms.)

Good luck. Couldn't hurt to seek advice from the MD and when you do, post here. It could help more than one of us at some point!

Sincerely,

Linny

I use products from Carol's Daughter. I have to go online to buy them. I use one of their oils on my DS's hair at least once a day and they have a good leave-in conditioner. Also, I only wash his hair once per week, which seems to help.

Hi

Thanks, I don't think it is ringworm as it does not look like that it is just flakey in the back. I put lotion on it yesterday and it seemed to help. I got my Carol's Daughter products today and gave her a bath tonight and used them so I am hoping I see some improvement in her hair. That stuff smells soooo good! We wash it every 3 days so we maybe washing it to often. Thanks for all your help!

I use Burt's Bee's Apricot Oil. When DD gets little dry patches on her scalp (we have extremely dry heat in our house!) I dab a little on there and comb it through. I also use it after I wash her hair. I really like the Burt's Bee's baby product line.

DD had cradle cap (dry, flaky scalp) as an infant...

My treatment was to put some olive oil to soak on flaky spots about 1 hr before bath... then in bath use a bit of shampoo and thoroughly (but gently!) massage the scalp with wash cloth or fingers, especially the dry areas.... Rinse well, possibly moisturize scalp after bath...

Cleared up quickly...
