Went to an Ethiopian birthday party today
We have a friend from our playgroup who is Ethiopian, and today we went to her youngest son's first birthday party. I decided to leave Caleb home with DH because I was thinking of managing the girls, but I really wish I had brought him! Everyone was asking about him anyway.
There were a lot of her extended family there, and she served homemade Ethiopian food (and ordered pizzas for the kids and people who weren't feeling adventurous). Also, I met a guy there with adopted twin girls from Ethiopia. It was really neat to chat with him, both about the twin aspect and being a transracial family. His girls were almost two, they were adopted at 13 months. It was a fun time and it was neat to do something a little different than our normal White Bread suburban things.

I went to a bar mizah once and felt similar to the way you described.
