1. At what age were your child(ren) when adopted?
My daughter was 14 months. (She is now almost 3 years old) 2. What race are you and your significant other? (If other please explain.) I am a white single adoptive parent. 3. What race is the child(ren) you have adopted? (If other please explain.) My daugher is Afro-Latino 4. How often did you or your child(ren) experience racism personally? So far, we have not experienced anything I would really consider racism. She is one of the most popular kids in her school and has been very well accepted. 5. How difficult is it for your child(ren) to face these prejudice experiences? So far she hasn't experienced anything I would consider prejudicial, but is noticing that some parents have the same color skin as their kids and some don't. 6. Do you teach you child(ren) the history of their culture and stress the importance of maintaining their culture? We do and will continue to teach all facets of my child's heritage, her white family, her African American and Latino roots. 7. My Interracially adopted child(ren) have struggled with their cultural identity. So far my daughter is very comfortable with her "pretty" brown skin and her "pretty" curly hair. 8. Overall how do you feel your family has been effected by interracial adoption? We stand out more than other families, but above that we are no different than anyone else. It does help that 40% of the families in our neighborhood are mixed race of some kind. 9. If there are any other comments you would like to voice to help me in my research please do so here. I think the more the world sees transracial families and the more pride transracial families show the world about being transracial, the less our children will have to deal with racism.
