I'm hoping to keep my daughter's hair natural as long as possible. I love braids & puffs, & also I want her to be proud of her special, natural hair.

I believe I read some where that Michelle O said she didn't and wouldn't perm her hair. If she feels like that about her hair, she would feel the same about her children's. I'm see both girls in braids, and with natural hair, and I believe it was hot combed or ironed and curled for that night...

Hair
My AA daughter is 8 years old. Her hair is now almost to her waist. I have had an awful time taking care of it. Since she was an infant, every place I went people were giving me advice on what to do with her hair. (It must have really looked bad) I have relaxed it, and used every product imaginable on it. I have finally for about the last year, taken her to a beautition every 2-3 weeks. Our lady washes, conditions, blows it dry and braids it.If you try to braid it when its wet, it kinks up as it dries and the braids get all funky looking. We get beads on the ends which keeps the ends from frazziling. The hairdo lasts 2-3 weeks and my daughter and I have never been happier. My doing her hair had become a real "hair pulling contest." Now my daughter always looks good, her hair is in excellent condition and we no longer have our daily fights. I pay $45.00 to get the braiding done. She swims daily and is on the football team. Braids fit up under her helmet too. Its worth the money, it takes about 1/2 to take down....almost 2 hours at the beauty parlor. (When I first started taking it down it took me almost 2 hours. I got better.

I am not sure whether it is permed or pressed (with a hot comb or flat iron)
But below are images of what hot combs look like.... What Sohmakun displayed is more of a flat iron and doesn't work as well for straightening really thick hair (I know I have REALLY thick hair) Last edited by makarios79 : 11-11-2008 at 09:54 AM. |

Lord knows that's truth...I was natural for 3 years and it was a complete waste of time to straighten my hair during the summer here in florida....I gave in after 3 years and got a relaxer..... I am reverting back to natural now due to a thryoid problem I have, it is just much better for my hair... |

The little girls' hair seem pressed or perhaps blow dried, and maybe a curling iron for special occasions. This is by observing their hair over time. My mom did the same, and for special occasions we had the same curly twists etc;
Big guess here, but I do not think either girls would need relaxers anyway. |

okay, ordered an electric comb and tried it out. Did the regular weekly hair ritual, wash & condition with Moisture Maniac (bed head), combed in the bath with the conditioner on it, put Humectris on as a leave-in. Then for the first time I blew it dry and then used the comb. I would not say we had Obama-children-like-hair
I would say we had longer frizzy hair, it actually did a mushroom sort of thing. So I put in puffs afterall. But they were really nice looking puffs. I imagine I should have used a different conditioner or something for this new treatment? |

I too think the girls hair was pressed. I also agree that their hair does not seem as course and probably does not need a perm. I will never let my child put chemicals in her hair. I do puffs on her now or I take her to the salon and have them braid her hair.
Even the girls at the salon said to never, ever perm her hair. |

Joskimo:
To get the hair to turn out non frizzy, put some type of light oil on the hair (my favorite is jojoba oil) after you've blown it dry. Also there's a product by Joico you can put on damp hair, prior to blow drying, to help with the frizz. You may have done this, but when blow drying and pressing the hair (with an electric comb), do it in small sections. Using the electric comb takes practice and you were pretty courageous to try it! I don't know how course your DD's hair is in it's natural state, but that has a lot to do with how it turns out. The Obama girls' hair doesn't seem too course in it's natural state making it easier to get the straightened look. |

If anyone lives in the Los Angeles area and needs help with AA hair, I'll be glad to get together with you to help. I'm not a beautician, but I am AA with lots of hair experience.
