name ?

We cannot decide on a boy name, so I posted some of our ideas on a baby name forum - DH likes the name Emmett. One person said we should absolutely, positively NOT use that name as it might remind people of Emmett Till. This could be taken the wrong way even if we were not caucasian. What do you think???

(BTW, we both like Alex, but not Alexander, and I like Emmanuel, but no one else seems to!)

I do know of Emmett Till, but I would venture to say that most folks would think of Emmitt Smith (the football player) before they would think of Emmett Till.

I like both Alex and Emmanuel.

I agree, I think most would think of Emmitt Smith.

I thought of Emmitt Smith too! But I also thought of one of my uncles drug addled friends named Emmitt.

My friend named her son Alex. Not Alexander. Just Alex. Alex Daniel. I love that name. I actually was the only one that believed she was having a boy and started referring to her unborn child as Alex Daniel and she chose that name. They had considered Alex with her first child, but has a girl and named her Jaime instead.

Emmett was a mn we considered for a son as it is a family name. One of DD's mn (first born) is Emma (also a family name, same family lol!) so we thought it would be too close to that. I like it. If it gives YOU a negative feeling that is one thing. But just because someone else has put a negative impression on a name doesn't mean your child might now "renew" the name. Hubby didn't like the name "Ian" because of a negative experience in childhood with a boy named that. One of DS's mn is Ian after his birth dad. It fits regardless of the initial impression. I say go for it if you like it!

I thought of Emmit Smith as well. Course I am from Texas. I have an Alexander though. My oldest sons name and we call him Alex. I love the name ... always have. It means Great Warrrior as well, I gave Alex his name because he was 3 months early and I wanted a name that symbolized what he would have to be to survive.

If you live in the deep south, people might think about Emmett Till, but otherwise I think you're okay. And even if they do, it was the murder of this boy that was one of the catalysts for the Civil Rights Movement. As I see it, you're still okay.

And btw, whenever I see the name Emmett, I think of Emmett Kelley, the clown. Then I think of Emmitt Smith. Both of them were great in their own way.

I think it's a wonderful name for a boy.

If you love the name, use it.

Even if the name did remind people of Emmett Till, I wouldn't see anything wrong with that. His name NEEDS to be remembered, his name does not bring shame, but what happened to him brings shame and should not be forgotten, IMHO. There is a major street in a large U.S. city named in his honor, just as you can find the same of Dr. Martin Luther King.

You say "Emmett" and I think "Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas."
And I don't think there's anything negative about Emmett Till (whom I just looked up).
There are approximately 17 billion Alex's in the world.
OK, not true, but it feels like it. Everywhere we go, there are at least 2 Alex's - usually a "boy Alex" and a "girl Alex". Alex is one of my favorite names too.

Who is Emmett Till?

I thought of Emmett Smith. I think it's a nice name. Don't worry about what other people think.

I vote for Emmett...I think it is a really nice name. There are too many Alex-es out there (no offenses to any Alex, because I like the name!)! I have no idea who Emmett Till is and now must look....

ETA: Just looked - - As infuriating as the story of Emmett Till's murder is, I just saw this song by Bob Dylan about it (and it makes me like the name more):

Bob Dylan: The Death Of Emmett Till

It makes me think of Emmitt Smith too, & I think that's what it would remind most people of.
