Anyone do an independent adoption?

Just wondering if anyone who has adopted transracially went this route. Did you place ads in newspapers, online? I'm curious how this works.

We did, our daughters bmom was a friend of a friend. Check the adoption laws in your state first. We live in Georgia and Georgia law states its unlawful to advertise for a adoption situation.

We did for #1 and we are currently doing the same for #2. With the case of our son, he found us through word of mouth. There was an attorney who had him and was trying to find him a forever family.

For #2, we went directly back to that attorney and she matched us with an e-mom. In our case the attorney advertises and the e-moms contact her. Then she matches the e-mom with any one of many couples who is registered with her. She does this by presenting several couples to the e-mom and letting her choose.

The attorney that we use is not in our state. She is in a state with very favorable adoption laws. The drawback is that we have to go to that state once the baby is born and stay there (at our cost) with the baby until the ICPC is complete. With our son that took 11 days.

We also pay the e-mom's expenses until the baby is born and for several months afterward. And attorney expenses.

And there is always a risk that the e-mom will change her mind sometime prior to TPR and decide to parent.
