Books for my 18 month old???
I need some help finding some books-anyone have some good ones please let me know! I'm having a hard time finding children's books that relate to transracial families, adoption, foster/adopt or rather any adoption, celebrating AA heritage, cultural diversity. I have a few books that have AA people represented but not nearly enough and I'm growing tired of reading the same books. He is a boy, 18 months old but can pay attention to just about any picture book.
Thanks! |

Two books I like to read to DD:
1. Brown Like Me (narrated by Noelle who is an AA adoptee and goes around looking for other things that are brown like her)...it's a little dated (I think it was published in the 70s, but so cute). 2. The Colors of Us by Karen Katz (I think that's what its called). It goes through all the different colors that kids can be and is just a beautifully illustrated and written book. Good luck! We like:
A Mother for Choco - about a bird who's looking for his mother, ends up being adopted by Mrs. Bear, who has three other children, an alligator, pig and hippo. Cute. Shades of Black - celebration of all the different colors black kids can be, and of their African heritage. Simple, poetically written, lots of faces to look at, and not too long for a toddler.

I have a book that is not exactly a children's book but it shows families, ALL families. The name is Why I Chose You, 100 Reasons Why Adopting You Made Us a Family. It's not a story book but it shows pictures of different families and how they became a family.
Another interesting book is Feathers & Fur by Audrey Penn. It's not about people, rather a cat who helps a nest of ducklings hatch after their parents were blown away in a storm. The babies take a liking to the cat and ask their parents of he can stay. More of a foster story but it does point out that love has no boundaries. Hope this helps. Helayne |
