I don't have any that show transracial families, I'm sorry to say. I'd love to hear recommendations!
My youngest son's favorite book right now is Busy Baby and it is all AA people in it. I have a book with a person who is several different colors, depending on how he feels, and that is my oldest one's favorite right now. I look forward to hearing some recommendations on transracial books! |

I don't have any transracial family books but we're an interracial couple so that's not the biggest issue. I do love one book my girls have called "I Love My Hair". My 8 year old, who is biracial but has "big hair" and LOTS OF IT, seems to be very sensitive when I let her hair "breathe". The other kids have comments so I got this book. Love it!!!

I love A Mother for Choco, Please Baby Please and Please Puppy Please (written by Spike Lee and his wife), A Blessing from Above (a Golden Book), Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears, and Is There Really a Human Race (written by Jamie Lee Curtis, not really a transracial adoption story, but a really cute book).
When we were waiting for our son to be born, I checked Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble for books with AA characters. We also have a couple dealing with adoption in general, such as Tell Me Again about the Night I was Born, The Day We Met You, and Over the Moon.

"The Colors of Us" by Karen Katz is a good one for transracial families. Some others that deal with celebrating diversity that we have are "A Rainbow of Friends" by P.K. Hallinan and "All The Colors of the Earth" by Sheila Hamanaka.
I also have the Jamie Lee Curtis books, "Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born", and "When I Was Little".

Black, White, Just Right shows a family with a white dad, AA mom, and their daughter. The illustrations are very nice.
I Can Do it Too, My Aunt Came Back, Brown Like Me, Shades of Black, Bein' With You This Way, Masai and I, Koi and the Kola Nuts (Liberian story), and Game Day (by Tiki and Ronde Barber) are all good books with AA main characters. Melissa (Cade, 6 bio; Maya, 5 Liberia) |

Maniac Magee.
It's a great book, more like a tall tale in some places about a homeless white boy and a black family that took him in and it's about so much more than that. I love that book.

"Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids" is about a mommy spider who has adopted a bunch of different buggie babies. It used to be a cartoon on TV also, but I am not sure if it still is.

Kimmom, I love "Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids". My youngest son loves to watch it and read the book too. Occassionally you can catch an episode on TV but we own and rent the dvds.

Miss Spider is still on - the Noggin network shows episodes regularly. I just checked the Noggin website, and it was on today at 10am ET, and again at 12:30.
I like the show, and felt like an idiot after watching it several times not even realizing it had an adoption theme!

More Books
More More More! Said the Baby, Vera Williams: 3 stories of babies and their families - 1 white/white, 1 white/black, one Asian/Asian. My son (17 months) loves it!
Black is White is Tan: A white man and a black women with their children. It's really a poem, and it's beautiful! How I Was Adopted, Joanna Cole: More for older kids (4th grade+) It's OK to Be Different, Todd Parr: The title says it all - there are illustrations of all the ways one can be different, including having different moms/dads and being adopted. Happy Adoption Day!, John McCutcheon and Julie Paschkis: A family adopts an Asian child, then celebrates with a number of other families of different colors. We're Different, We're the Same, Bobbi Kates: A Sesame Street that highlights the differences and similarities between people. I know we have more, but I can't remember them all! ![]()
