Adoption Timeline
Hello,
I am new to this board. After dealing with failed infertility treatments for a year, my husband and I have decided to adopt. We are starting the process for a AA/biracial adoption. (Meeting with an agency on Dec. 2 to go over a few questions before we officially apply.) We are CC but my husband has one AA sister and one AA/Hispanic brother through foster care adoption. Can any one share, what was the general timeline of their AA/biracial adotption... From first appying to final bringing home baby. Thank you |

2 Weeks. But it will vary for many reasons. How open you are to gender and medical things as well as your agency.

We were open to gender and minor medical. Our first meeting with agency was late February and we brought our son home in July.
Ask the agency what their average wait is and how long the longest waiter has been waiting. (Did that make sense?) That should give an indication. I think it varies a lot based on the area and the agnecy as well.

I waited 6 months the first time (1998) and had almost no wait the second time (2005). It depends on how many pregnant women make adoption plans around the same time you are approved to adopt. It's hard to estimate because supply and demand changes daily.

Brandyn Coppedge died on 9/11/09. Rosie Smith died on 9/30/09 and Thapelo Kwofie died on 11/1/09. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is no longer recommending safety kits. They are now recommending that anywhere children live or visit should be free of corded window products. |

Our waits have been 3 months (including homestudy, from beginning), 2 months (with homestudy update) and 3 months (another homestudy update).
We've used three different agencies, but were open to any race, either sex. Preferred the child to be born healthy, but would consider minor medical (all of our children were born healthy). |

May 2005: Signed with agency
June 2005: Began homestudy September 2005: We are presented with 2 situations, neither of which we can accept because our home study isn't finished (both babies were going to be born before the homestudy could be completed) October 16, 2005: We match with a birthmom who is due in January October 17, 2005: We have our last homestudy meeting January 17, 2006: Jack is born! January 20, 2006: We take Jack to our hotel, as we wait for the ICPC (Interstate Compact for Placement of Children) to be done January 28, 2006: We take Jack home! So, the short answer is: 8 months

Thank you all for responding.
We are open to either sex of any race, but it is important to us that the baby is born healthy. The agency I am planning on using says wait for AA is usually 1-6 mon. and biracial 3-12. But, it is so nice to know what some real experiences have been. |
