Did your child's hair change? When?

My DD's hair right now (at 15 mos) is sort of soft ringlet curls (someone said she looks like Shirley Temple!). I just shampoo it (and usually don't comb it...I also never comb my own hair, but throw it up in a ponytail!). Anyway, I assume her hair can change and become more coarse or frizzy even after 15 mos? If it can change, can anyone give me their experience of when their kid's hair changed? I need to prepare myself to take better care of her hair than I do of my own! I have read with interest the product suggestions in the other thread. TIA

Drihans hair was sofy and changed at 3 mo. That was when I started needing detangler to comb through it. Now at 17 mo. she has VERY thick tight curls and I have to wet it down with detangler first and then use a hairdress/conditioner to comb through it and it takes about 25-30 min. just to do that. I think every child is different.

It's been interesting to me to see changes in AA hair. Our son, AA, had soft curls at 5 mos. and by the age of your child, his soft curls had fallen out and his hair became very coarse. He's 8 now and we keep it short and sweet and he's so handsome. Our daughter is black/Italian. She came to us at 2 with very thick and curly and somewhat coarse hair. At age 7, her hair is very thick and long, very coarse, very curly. My AA husband says her hair will change again which is why not to relax yet. Many AA women tell me the same thing so I hot comb it once a week to make it easier to style and comb through Sometimes I let her go with no braids or rubber bands to give her head a break. Mostly I braid or twist it and it always looks very nice. Our two younger children are biracial and have very silky, looser hair. All they need is hair washed and combed out. They don't need any "product". Every child is different. Sounds like your daughter doesn't need any special treatment than what you're doing and if and when she does, you will see it. If the hair begins to dry out, it will need more moisture. I use a very nice product (available at Sally's) called Liv. It's a white creme. Depending on the thickness and dryness of your child's hair, you will use more or less. I personally think people make too big a deal about hair. Every child has perfect hair, black or white or biracial or Asian -- straight, curly, wiry, coarse or soft. We adjust the hairstyle accordingly. Amen.

Josie

Thanks, guys. I just remember as a kid my mom doing all sorts of funky things to my hair (putting it in curlers so it would be curly!, french braiding, etc.). And I am such a "slob" and have no talent for doing cute things with my DD's hair.

Tracey, your DD is so gorgeous, btw (not that you didn't know!)

Has anyone used a product called Copa on their kids' hair? It is supposed to be an all-natural, non-chemical type of temporary relaxer, that loosens hair to soft curls? I just wondered if this works. My family is vegetarian and also we try to buy more earth-friendly products in general. PS-Tracey, your daughter could be in showbusiness! Her glowing personality is obvious from pictures alone. What a beauty!

My sons hair fell out from 2-4 months and was replaced by course, very dry, loose curls (it has grown more around the top and middle of his head so he looks like he has a fro mohawk) I started using Pink on it and it has helped so much. I could see how it would easly be two greasy looking if you kids hair wasn't super dry. I think if I had started using it a month earlier he would have more hair, I think it was so dry at 3 months that it was breaking off. He is only 6 1/2 months now.

You never know how it will be. My older daughter had soft baby hair-which changed over to the current texture (which is much curlier) by the time she was 2. I take her to have it blown dry & straightened with a flat iron every other week. It's very healthy hair. My baby daughter is almost 17 months and came home with very curly, dry, course hair. It has to be conditioned regularly and is very hard to comb unless it wet and conditioned. When Maire-Kate was 17 months old, I didn't have to braid her hair. But with Hanna, I have to braid her her hair to keep it from becoming tangled.

Wit our Biracial daughter, when she was born she had alittle soft hair with one curl at the top of her head. It all fell out at about 6 months or so. When it came back in it came in on top first. She had a Mohawk of soft loose curls! LOL By the time she was a year she had soft curls all over. By 18 months it started to get tighter. By 2 it was still soft but got tighter. Now at 6 her hair can't make up it's mind if it wants to be white or black! LOL It is very tight but soft AND coarse! LOL

With our AA daughter she was born with TONS of the softest silkiest straight hair I had ever seen! By the time she was a few months old it began getting coarser near the nap of her neck. By the time she was a year old her hair was coarse.

Same thing with our AA son.
Here are pictures of them as newborns & then now.

I thought your baby girl (Gift from God photo) was a doll!!! -she's just like one of those "So Truly Real" dolls from Ashton Drake. Then I took another look and thought, she's a real baby. Your children are so beautiful and they all have very pretty hair.

My daughter had a mohawk of tight curls on top with smoother short hair on the sides until she was about 18 months old. Her hair (at 3 years) is now tight curls all over that I keep in twists or braids and is about 4-5 inches long.

Go to the Cornrows and Co. website, buy their book called Kids Talk Hair, video called Thunderhead hair care, and their natural hair products. My daughter gets raves about her hair, and I started out knowing nothing.

My son had very fine, short, straight hair at birth. He lost all his hair on the sides and the back of his head, except for fuzz on top and a little "spitz" in the back.

Now, at 16 months he already has quite thick hair, almost straight on the sides and the back and loose curls on top. Sort of like "Kramer" from Seinfeld.

Thanks for all the replies. Now at 17 mos, she still has the soft ringlet curls...though she wakes up looking like Albert Einstein a lot of mornings. I have continued touse the spray detangler...I don't even attempt to brush or comb her hair - - just finger comb!

wow i am glad i ran into this conversation....... our eldest son had a soft mohawk by 4 months..... and loose ringlets...... over time by the age of 2 he had pencil round curls.... he still has them and i keep them semi tamed...... but always soft and conditioned
our second son is biracial and was born with a head of soft silky hair..... while still soft the hair around the sides is thinning and the top has some loose curls forming although the hair is sparse.......i use a similar product to pink lotion, but is a kids product..... that seems to work wonders for both boys....... i am curious to see what his final hair will look like.......
