So when the birth record & ** says a child is caucasian. And as time goes by it becomes increasingly clear the child is biracial. Is there any way to determine nationality?

I think there are a type of DNA tests they can do. Not sure, but hopefully someone else can tell you. Have you asked your ped.? They might know.

We've had two pediatricians (first one retired). First Dr. said Hispanic/Caucasian, new pediatrician say AA/Caucasian. Everyone has there own "opinion". It truly doesn't matter to us, she's ours, and she's perfect. But she may very well ask one day and I don't want to tell her we don't know.

Our daughter's birthmother was unsure of the birthfather's ethnic background and we never had the opportunity to meet with him.She is half Irish, half German. He claims to be part Caucasian, part African American, part Native American and part Puerto Rican. Our daughter has fair skin, blonde curly hair and green eyes. Her pediatrician, who is also an adoptive dad of a "multi-ethnic" child, told us at birth that our daughter was not full Caucasian, despite her appearance, as the white part of her eyes is more gray than white. According to him, this is a sure indication of mixed race and is widely accepted in medical field. Any one else hear of this?

Another way to tell is at birth the cuticle area of the nail beds will be darker if they AA or Biracial. The darker the area the darker the child will be. Also the tops of thier ears will be darker. On boys, thier private area will be very dark.
Also blood tests can tell. Our son is full AA. He is lighter than our Biracial DD who looks Hispanic in color. I kept playing with his BMom that she was wrong & has the wrong father for him! LOL I keep telling her he HAS to be Biracial! LOL But seeing her other children, it's just the way he is, very light. His grandma has a sister, who I've met, that is VERY VERY light skinned. Looks CC she's so light in color. GOOD LUCK. Like you said, it doesn't matter, but you just want to know. From your Icon I guessed her to be part hispanic. But that picture is so small it's hard to tell! LOL Deb

We have one child that is now grown. We were never given any info about the baby's background, except where and when the birth occurred.
While this kept us guessing, and while we knew this baby was born in an Asian country, none of us have ever known exactly the genetic make-up....and like I said, this 'baby' is now grown. It has never bothered our child. It has never been an issue; and believe me, this now, grown-up, is quite successful and happy as an individual. Truly, don't worry. I really don't think it matters....and, if it does, as time goes by, certainly the precise-ness of genetic make-up, will become more focused by the time she's grown and wondering, KWIM? Let her be the one to decide; and not worry about it now. Sincerely, Linny |

My daughter is aa/hispanic yet her birth certificate says hispanich/cc. Her b-father is defintily aa. My SW met him. When the birth certificate came in, I questioned it. It is clearly wrong. Does anyone know if there is a way to ammend the birth certificate?

JC10, forgive me for jumping in here, but my name is shefalie, and I live int he UK, I am transracially placed.....I am bi-racial, mixed race..half caste....mixed blood, whatever terminology people use to lable us......or we ourselves.....
i was long term fostered from age of 3.... when i was a baby they did a blood test, that indicated i was of mixed race....asian indian.....i hd a kind of "dusky" look.....so I guess I grew up to be a dusky maiden!lol raised in white family. You can tell by your eyes as well, the optician told me or asked me when checking my eyes as an adult, was I part asian(from india) as she could tell my looking into my eyes....... so hopefully you can fidn soemthing out to be prepared to help her when she gets a bit older and asking questions cos others will bea sking her...bless your heart. shefalie |

Most kids do want to know their heritage/ethnicity, at the very least.
It seems that unless the b-mother puts a definite father on the birth certificate, only the mother is listed if she is not married. None of my children, even those whose birthmoms knew who the father was, listed a father on the birth certificate, so only the mother's ethnicity was listed. The ethnicity listed is the MOTHER's not the child's, thus only half the child's ethnicity is on the certificate if the father isn't listed. That's just the way they do it. Also, if you are issued a new bc when the child is adopted, they will list YOU as the "mom" and your ethnicity, not the birthmom's! So it gets more complicated. Not that anyone pays attention to the bc for such things, but some of my kids have noted that and complained. I have explained to them that it is MY ethnicity listed, not theirs, but they still don't like it. Unless we change the whole system (of changing bc's to indicate the adoptive parent as PARENT), this won't change. I happen to think that system is insane and there should be some other way of doing it. |
