If you were open to any race, how soon were you matched?

DH and I are in the homestudy process for a domestic, open, newborn adoption. We are open to any race, and were given an estimated timeframe of 3 to 6 months once homestudy is completed and our profile is being shown to prospective birthparents. I know it's only an estimate, and I was curious as to how long others who were open to any race had waited or are waiting. So, how soon were you matched? Did you have any failed matches, or did your first match work out? How long did you have between match and birth? I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much, but it sure would be nice to have a quick match and no failed matches. Our agency has been open for 6 or 7 years and she's only had one failed match in all that time so our odds seem pretty good, but I can't help but worry.

Thanks!

The first time, 1998, it took almost 6 months-but this was a closed adoption. The second time, 2005, it only took about three weeks! This is a semi-open adoption with limited contact through the agency.

Hi, I'm adopting through fost/adopt. From homestudy approval to my five-day-old son placed in my arms, it was one day shy of two months. His adoption has taken another sixteen months and counting...

Sorry for just barging but please be wary of agencies that only have one failed match in 7 years... It's not normal, and I would worry about their ethics frankly.

Fran,
I was thinking the same thing. What do they mean by a failed match. Do they mean the child was in the home and then taen away later? Or do they mean a pbmom chose a couple and then changed her mind before child was ever in home. It is highly suspect if it is the second. However, I know in my state (Indiana) the bmom has to sign before leaving the hospital and then if she changes her mind, she must take the aparents to court and prove that she is a more fit parent than the aparents. My agency had only had that happen one time. (The aparents were both HIV Positive.) If that is what they mean, it is possible, but I would aks some more questions.

Well, seeing as this agency is very nearly our only option due to the length of our marriage and my DH's age, unless we want to wait another year or two, we pretty much have to go with them. No one else will take us for those reasons, except one other agency that's MUCH more expensive and quite frankly out of our price range. Nothing I've seen or heard from them makes me question their ethics -- we have talked to several people who have adopted from them, the owner of the agency met with us herself, they are very professional and I was frankly very impressed by them. Maybe I will turn out to be wrong, but I am hoping (like all of you did, I'm sure) that this is the agency that will bring us our child.

Less than two weeks and we had four situations to choose from. The one we chose didn't work out and two days later we were called about our baby who happened to have been born the same day. I was so glad our nursery was done.

Timeframe

We were very fortunate in all three of our adoptions. Our first adoption in 1999, it was six weeks from turning in our homestudy to picking up our son at the hospital. Our second adoption in 2001, we were chosen one week after turning in our homestudy and our son was born two weeks later, so three weeks total. Our third adoption of our daughter, we weren't even on the list yet. Our worker knew we wanted a girl this time and she had a situation that was perfect for us. We met the birthmom in August and our daughter was born in October.

Our situation is unique in that we have not had a failed adoption or a situation where we were presented but not chosen. Like I said, extremely unusual and not the norm. We used to speak at our agency about our experience, but they stopped asking us because it wasn't realistic enough and got people's hopes up too high.

Best of luck to you, and I'm sure it won't be any time at all and you'll be holding your beautiful baby in your arms!

janelle- I am surprised you had trouble with your dh's age...most agencies that I found had a limit of "must be 25 minimum" I know that because dh and I are both 23 (of course we have been married almost four years so didn't really look at the required length of marriage). We had a HARD time finding an angency (that was within our budget) but found one and are SO SO happy with it, the more I find out about it, the happier I am we chose them..

On a side note - maybe that was the agency that your baby will be born at, so God just made it easier for you to find!! LOL (that is how I had to look at when I was soo frustrated!!)

Natalie

p.s. Sorry- I don't have a timeline, we are just starting out!
