Hi my husband and I are adopting transracially, we just finished our homestudy. We are a Caucasion coulple who are looking to adopt a African American or Bi-racial infant. We have gotten an estimate of how long our wait will be from our angency but are curious to know how long others who have adopted have waited. If you wouldn't mind to tell me how long it took from the time of completing your homestudy to being picked by a birthmother or placed with a child I would really appreicate it. Thanks
Also any other helpful information about your process after completeing your homestudy would be appreciated. |

We are also CC and adopted a BR boy but were open to full AA as well. We were actually picked before our homstudy was completed for a baby born situation. I have the feeling our agency purposefully delayed our homestudy so that we would not use another agency for placement. So from the time we turned in the paperwork for the homestudy until placement was about a month and it was an agency pick. There were no waiting families who were open to AA/BR
I would find out how many people at your agency are currently waiting that are hoping to adopt AA or BR. That should give you a better idea of your wait but it does depend largely on how many AA/BR situations your agency gets. |

Jen, I feel like I am following you around today, LOL.
We are also CC and adopted a BR girl in June of 2005. Our homestudy was done in May of 2004 and we signed on with an agency that probably wasn't the best fit for us a week later. We were matched the same day, but the match failed three weeks later. We went on to have another failed attempt with them (one match was CC/Hisp and the other was CC/AA) before we decided to do something else since we felt the agency wasn't working well for us. We signed on with our facilitator in March of 2005 and our dd was born in June. It was a fantastic experience and we can't wait to do it again!!!

First.. welcome to the boards!
DP and I are CC, our son is AA/CC (though we were open to full AA). We adopted independently, but were contacted by our son's birthmom about nine days after we put up a brief introductory profile about us online. We officially matched eleven days after her first contact and our son was born about four weeks later! We actually had to really scramble to get a homestudy done in that amount of time. Good luck to you and I hope the journey to your kidlet is a quick one. ![]()

DH and I are CC and our children are AA. With our son, we first contacted the agency in Dec of 2003. He came home in Dec 2004. We also had a few failed matches within that time. With our daughter, we were networking with a few different agencies/facilitators and began the process at the end of Aug. 2005. She came home almost 2 weeks ago. We also had a few failed matches this time around as well. The ironic part with both our kids is that they were born first then we found out about them. We do not have any relationship with either of their birthparents(their decision). The waiting and wondering is the hardest part but our kids are a perfect fit for our family.

We are CC and adopting a AA baby boy. We were matched 2 months from our homestudy being approved. Trey was born two days after being matched...he was 3 weeks early.
We started getting calls about possible situations the day we turned in our homestudy paper work which was 2 weeks after we signed with the agency. The first call was for a baby girl already born. We were not ready yet, so we declined. If you are open to race and gender I would say be prepared that you can get a call fast, but that is not guarnteed. I know a couple at my agency open to Biracial and they have been waiting two years. Good Luck, Congrats, and Welcome!!

hi,
you might find some interesting articles on Pact's website. http://www.pactadopt.org/press/artic...ansracial.html the organization is run by folks who wrote the book "inside transracial adoption". good luck. Lisa

Thanks
Thanks for all the responses. I did check out thepact website and started reading some of the articles. Thanks. I guess the time frame varises a lot. I know that looking at my agencies current active members there are almost 200 people waiting but under 15 willing to accept African American children and only about 20 willing to accept bi-racial children (their are really only about 22 people the same people wanting to adopt an African American child are the same one who are wanting to adopt a Bi-racial child for the most part) They told us 1-3 months to be placed with a baby based on what we were willing to accept as far as drug exposure and birthparents health histories. There was a situation a little over a week ago that they had to advertise outside of their active families because no one met the situation. If we had been active we would have been considered for this.
We have everything ready for a baby because our homestudy was suppose to take about a month less than it did, we went with a different agencies for this who we were glad we decided not to become active with. Our agency doesn't do homestudies in our state so we had to have someone else do it. After we dealt with this other agency we were so happy to have picked out the one we did. though I am wondering what is a facilitator? We never looked at that much, I didn't know there were ones who specialized in African American adoptions. |

We were a CC family until we adopted our beautifull AA baby girl. We were called about her being born 2 weeks after signing with our placement agency. The agency picked us.

facilitators are folks who aren't necessarily trained in anything, but they make matches for you. we used a facilitator for our adoption to speed the process. They aren't regulated like agencies and some can be good, others not. We would use a facilitator again in a heartbeat. They're also not legal in every state so you need to make sure they're legal in your state before using them.
Pact specializes in placing children of color in same race and transracial adoptions, not just aa adoptions.

Our homestudy was finished in late October 2003 and our daughter was born early December 2003. We brought her home when she was 6 days old.

We have completed two transracial adoptions. The first was a fost/adopt situation. With our second adoption we submitted our application for a domestic newborn adoption and matched the next day. Because we only had to update our homestudy it was completed very quickly. Not quickly enough though. Our daughter was born 2 weeks early, only a few weeks after matching. Because we are foster parents the agency was able to do an interim placement with us until the homestudy was coomplete. Once the homestudy was complete (2 weeks later) they did the official adoption placement.

Still waiting
Our home study was done at the end of August and we're still waiting. We have a small agency but we're 1 of 2 families who wants a child of any race. I spoke to our social worker about branching out to other agencies and she said they wanted us to be exclusive with them for a year. A little over 5 months isn't that long, I guess.
