I love your son's name! Devin was one I considered for my first son, but husband didn't like it. I also love Hawaiian names! My former boyfriend's younger brother's name is Kekoa. I went to high school and college in Hawaii and still miss it terribly!

OMG, Devildog wife, how neat that your baby was born on the Marine Corps' birthday! My dad was also born on that day, in 1928. He didn't know he was born on the Marine Corps birthday until he was in boot camp, but he was definitely born to be a Marine, and served almost 35 years on active duty. He will be 80 this year and has been retired for a lot of years, but he is still a Marine! He is in incredible shape for his age, too!

I will think of Cameron on my dad's birthday! I hope his heart defect is taken care of and won't continue to be a problem. My granddaughter's mother had a congenital heart defect and had open heart surgery. They wanted to do an echocardiogram when she got pregnant, to be sure, but everything was fine and she is not expected to have any further problems. I hope that will be the same with Cameron!

noelani--I wondered if you were from Hawai'i! I guess the name tipped me off. There's a handful of other forum members who are either living in Hawai'i or are now on the mainland. I'm hoping to start an adoption playgroup on Oahu...if you're ever in town let me know!

Celesyee, I wish I were in Hawaii, now, but I haven't been there in over a decade, and it was much longer than that when I lived there. However, I left part of my heart there and have never gotten over it! My father was trasferred there when I was 15 and I finished growing up there. I never intended to leave, for good, but things happened that way, anyway! I credit living in Hawaii with doing a lot to prepare me for raising a multiracial family.

A few years back, I was asked to write a review of a book written by a white adoptive mother of a black child. In it, she talked about prejudice in her neighborhood. It wasn't until the end that she revealed that they lived in Hawaii. I was floored! Unless they lived in a very isolated, exclusive neighborhood, or something, I can't fathom that their family wouldn't be accepted there! And, from my experience, the child should have been accepted the easiest of all! That book was extremely negative, in general, and I wonder if that mother might have just been one to concentrate on anything that resembled discrimination. If we all did that, we could certainly find things to complain about! Oh well, one of my soap box topics!

Noelani

P.S.
A very dear friend who is Hawaiian/Chinese, gave me my Hawaiian name, which I love!

Noelani,

There actually are some communities, where CCs and AAs-especially those in the military-may have a harder time being accepted by the community. A lot of CCs, have reported experiencing "reverse racism" in Hawai'i, however, "reverse racism" would mean that racism is only directed towards non-CC. Racism is racism...it's not color blind or restrictive to geographical locations.

Even San Francisco...a lot of ppl assume since it's so diverse that there are no issues with racism. However, it's quite the opposite. SF has a lot of ethnic enclaves and outside of their communities, one can still experience racism and stereotypes.
