Black childrens--skin+hair care(home remedy)

Hi

I would like to here what you use on for your children's hair and skin care(what line or home remedy). For my daughter's skin I use a home remede:
baby oil-lemon juice-honey. This is for if she has a really dry spot. I rub it on to the section and then wait 15 minutes and rince it.

Swimming can be a big problem for us! I found a simple, super simple 'remedy' told to be by a AA friend which works like magic

1/2 cup baking soda
1 cup warm water
(thats it..)
First you rince out your child's hair with there normal shampoo. Rinse out. Then you pour this on and scrub. It gets rid of the chlorine smell and makes the shampoo smell stand out more!

For hair I use a line from east africa which works very well and a line from here that I like. After shampooing I massage into scalp, african shea butter and mayonaise and some times a bit of goats milk.(Done after shampoo) Leave in my remedy fot 10-15 minutes then I will rince out. Her hair comes so soft!! (i dont use much of any ingredient at all, a bit works.)

If you have any home remedies post it here! Also which products work for your childs hair and skin

Extra Virgin Olive Oil also works on AA dry skin and hair. It's about the only thing I can use to keep my daughter moisturized during the winter months.

Sunblock

I use a home remedy for skin care but store bought hair products.

For skin cream(rub on 1 daily) main ingredient is --sunblock, yup sunblock! I use it on my (face) and now I have super soft skin and no 'bags.' There are ofcourse some other ingredients but they are all cheap and probably will have in your cupboards/fridge! If you would like the remedy contact me!

My son has really dry hair. Lately we've been trying this product called Carols' Daughter hair butter. My husband swears it works better than regular hair grease, and it moisturizes his scalp better. It smells good too.

HI, I use on my AA daughter's skin "soft as me" lotion. It works great for shining up ashy skin and moisturizing. You can get it at beauty supply places. It is African Royal products.

I'll second the sunblock. But, I'll also add that I've purchased a 'lesser number of block' lotion, and it wasn't nearly as effective. I think the higher the 'block number' the heavier the lotion; and so it moisturizes more.
I've also been known to use baby petroleum jelly on their skin. While it can be messy.......it can really do a great job for the day.
For the hair, I continue to swear by Biosilk hair treatment oil from Farouk. I use it daily and have since our three year old was a small baby. It's a little pricey....but it takes just a little. Tried a ton of other things, but always come back to this. (Daily, I spritz their hair with water, towel dry, then work in the Biosilk oil. Smells wonderful and leaves their hair shiny and smooth, without a lot of build up or 'oily feel'.)

For shampoo, I went from child's/baby shampoo with conditioner to the Pantene (women of color) shampoo (though I'm not crazy about their conditioner). For moisturizing, I've tried a ton of stuff (pricey and not so pricey). I currently use the Suave brand of 'Nexxus' conditioner.
Works well for our children.

Sincerely,

Linny

My aa daughter is 12 months old. Her hair is long on the top and long in the back but just on the bottom. The sides and middle are just now growing in. I wash her hair once a week. Every other day when she is taking a bath I wet her hair and put a conditioner on it while she baths. Everyday I mist her hair down with a water/conditioner mixture and then apply a leave in conditioner along with a few drops of almond oil. My question is this. Am I putting to much water on her hair? I was told that the water is also drying her hair. I'm not sure that I would be able to comb through her hair if I didn't use the method I'm using. Any imput would be helpful.

Hi Maria,

Just my opinion, but it does sound like you may be putting too much water on her hair. Water on our hair has a drying affect, even though the conditioner makes it feel soft, when it dries, it curls tightly, and is even harder to comb.

Do you have any light moisturizing hair oil you can use? Our hair needs some kind of light moisturizer since it gets so dry and brittle, and our scalps do not produce enough oil on their own.

I am sure somebody more experienced with little girl's hair will be able to give you some better advice. I'm not real good at explaining things. We've been using Carol's Daughter's products on our son's hair, and a moisturizing oil spray which makes combing Cody's hair easy. I can't remember the name of the spray though. Just for Me products work well too.

Blessed, If you live in an area where water has a super high mineral content and is hard, it could be the water; however, I doubt it. Sometimes the sides just grow slower than the rest of the hair, especially if she lost much of her hair as a baby, as my own daughter did. In fact, my dd who has very long hair now at 2 1/2 had basically none on the sides at one year. She slept on either side of her head and it rubbed.

I do not think it is your routine. I must add a bit of water daily to dampen my daughter's hair in order to style it. We dampen and thoroughly massage oil in every morning (when hair is not braided), either Burts Bees Apricot oil or Grapeseed oil. I avoid anything with mineral oil on skin or hair. Have you tried other oils? I do not know how well almond penetrates. You might try skipping the leave in conditioner and just use the oil. We use leave in conditioner only once a week right after we wash, California Baby, but do not use it again throughout the week. It seems to weigh her hair down and increases the lint factor. We get tons of compliments on the health and shine of her hair from AA women and mothers.

Each child's hair is so different; sometimes it is just trial and error. I suspect I will be trying new stuff all over again with my son, who is now almost 3 months old. Best of luck.

Thanks for all the good advise. For leave in conditioner I've been using Neutrogena silk touch leave in cream. Smells nice but not sure if it's enough. I also add a few drops of apricot, almond or Jojoba oil. I don't really care for the smell of the Jojoba oil. Yesterday I purchased Just For Me scalp conditioner. It was recommended but it does contain mineral oil which some have said to stay away from. She has very little flaking but I thought I'd try this.

Red~ We do have a water softner so hopefully that helps. My dd lost all of her hair as a baby and the top has just grown so much faster and the texture is much different on the top than the bottom. I guess she has the s curl but much tighter around the lower back part of her head. Your right about trial and error and I'm sure as she grows her hair will continue to change.

Well, I just wanted to thank you all for your helpful advise. We have not used the water/conditioner mixture to mist her hair with and that has helped. Her hair doesn't curl up so tightly and that means less snarls. I'm just using a leave in conditioner with a few drops of oil and then comb her hair out with a wide tooth comb. Wow, what a difference. Her hair looks soft and not dry at all. Trial and error and of course good advise from you all. Thanks :0)

A popular remedy in my area is coconut oil. You can use it to condition and leave it in as a styling aid and it works well for dry skin.

Also henna makes a wonderful conditioner. For people that have dry hair, and cannot wash it daily, it is idea becaue its effect lasts for weeks. If you use regular henna, it will give a red highlight. To avoid this you can buy neutral colored henna.

People with dry skin should avoid mineral oil-the main ingredient in baby oil. It robs the skin of vitamins that it needs to be healthy-resulting in even dryer skin.

I have chilren with extremely dry skin and use aloe vera gel on them and myself. It works as a moiturizer and can be used on the skin and hair. It is the only thing that I will put in my children's hair (since their's is not dry enough for cocnut oil) as a styling product. It gives moisture and protection.
