need our own lawyer?

Hi,
If we make a domestic adoption, (transracial or not) and are having our homestudy done by a licensed agency and plan to work with a placement agency, should we still get our own lawyer involved? My husband thinks so just because of the amount of money involved, but I guess I believed that wasnt' necessary- assuming our agencies are on the up that is! :-)
thanks

If your agency knows what they are doing, you shouldn't need an attorney. BUT, we used an attorney because we adopted independently. Our agency did the homestudy & the post-placement visits. The attorney handled the rest & then the finalization.

Our agency hired the attorney who handled the legal stuff and finalization in our daughter's birth state. He was a very nice man and everything went smoothly. We are in California and our daughter was born in Kansas. We did not need our own attorney here in California. Our California home study agency also handled the ICPC paperwork. Our agency has attorneys they work with in almost every state. I think their paperwork actually discourages people from hiring their own attorneys.

Good luck to you!

Tina
