support group in Dallas/Ft Worth?

My partner and I are curious if there are any support groups for transracial families in the DFW area? We are a white, lesbian couple w/ an AA daughter whom we adopted as an infant last August. We would like to participate/communicate with others who are transracial families, gay or straight!

Congratulations on your child!
Right now, I don't think that there is a formal support group in DFW for transracial adoptions. There WAS a group for interracial families, but it has not been active since 2001.
I have two sons, one bio (7) and one adopted (4 - AA/caucasian) and I do have some friends who have adopted transracially in the area.
If you are like me, you get very excited when you see black or biracial children with white parents. We are not alone!! I have found Dallas to be a very open and comfortable place to raise both my sons.

re. Dallas Support Group

I would be very interested in getting together with you and your partner, and anyone else that has transracially adopted in the DFW area. My husband and I adopted a biracial (Caucasian/Hispanic) baby girl last year through domestic adoption and we love her dearly! We are Caucasian and love her as if she were our biological child. However, we know that our society is not color blind. I think the chance to meet others that have transracially adopted to talk about issues specific to transracial adoption would be great. Maybe we could meet for coffee some evening in July?

Great! I live in East Dallas. What do you think of arranging a get together somewhere in between like Half Price Books on NW Hwy and 75 Central? They have a little cafe area and there are also a few tables within the bookstore, so it's a nice place to chat in a relaxed environment. I'm pretty open after the beginning of July, so if the 2d or 3d week of July works for you (and anyone else that sees this and is interested), maybe we coud set something up for then. I could do early evening or a Sat morning.

My husband and I have a 19 month old son and I would be interested in getting together also. We are free the end of July.

Yeah! What do you think of Sat July 31 at Half Price Books off of NW Hwy and 75, say around 9:30ish? We could meet at the Black Forest Cafe that's attached to the bookstore as it's a small area where it would be easy to find one another.

Wow, I don't check in for a few days and look at all the replies! I was starting to wonder if we were the only transracial adoptive family in DFW!!

The meet-up on July 31st sounds great. We are in the process of selling/buying a house and are going to be crazy that weekend, but we will try to make it. I also know another woman who has a 3 yo AA boy and I'll tell her about it. (BTW, I know of a great house in Arlington for sale . I am excited by the possibilities of this group! So much diversity!

Let's do try to keep this forum going. I will post another topic for discussion!

Single CC mom with 3yr old AA adopted son...that's me!

We would love to get together with you all too! But, I will be flying out that day for vacation. You all will have to let me know when another good time to get together would be.

Thanks, sbecke, for getting this started!

Bec and Ben

You can count me in I will be there. Are we supposed to bring the kiddos or is this for adults only? Either way is fine by me!! Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Sincerely,
