Single Parent Adoption???

Hey everyone! I'm new to the site and was hoping for some help. I am a 30 year old single teacher who is looking to adopt a biracial infant. I'm trying to find a good agency that embraces singles and isn't super expensive. I live in NJ but would not mind traveling if I could find a good agency. I would also love to know what kind of questions to ask the agencies in order to find the best one for me. I was hoping to find some other single adoptive parents who have done it and can give some advice. Thanks!

Bethany

Single adoption

I actually just spoke to that agency on the phone. Would you mind telling me more about your experience with them? How long did you wait? Were they single friendly?

I forgot to mention that I am a teacher, too....I started the process in Oct of 2003 and was picked by my birthmom on April 24....I found this to be very fast....I found them to be very upfront..I actually did some of my homestudy classes in NJ and liked the 2 social workers there very much...I found them to be very friendly and HONEST...I thought they were very single friendly...I signed up to take either a biracial child or an AA child..I did get a placement with an AA baby...He is doing wonderfully and getting along well with his big sister...I would use this agency again

Wow that is excellent. I thought I got a good feeling about them. I am going to an informational meeting Feb. 19th so I am excited. I friend of mine who has adopted before is telling me to make sure that I totally check things out. They are trying to find single references for me. Thanks a lot.

I just saw this thread, and would like to tell you of my experience.
I'm from Oklahoma and used Adoptions From the Heart for my 2nd adoption. I signed with the agency on Feb.13 and was in New Jersey with my new baby girl on June 13. What a miracle. If I were to adopt another infant ( I now have 4kids) Iwould use them again. This agency is terrific.

You wanted to know more about my experience. .. well here goes.
At the time I was pursuing my 2nd adoption, my then 4y/o was praying to God for a brown baby sister. My Dad who was wheelchair bound was on an extended visit, and I was frantically trying to get my homestudy going. I used a local agency for that. Adoptions from the Heart told me that I would have a baby by the end of the summer or early fall.(This was mid Feb). At anyrate, my Dad is hoping for a girl, my dd wants a brown baby sister and I'm just praying for healthy.
My homestudy was in the print it stage when I got a call at work on Jun 10 that a baby had been born and they were going to show my profile along with several others to this Mom that evening. The Mom had signed on late with the agency and delivered before she could select an adopting family. At any rate I was called back about 7:30pm with the news i had a daughter. I had Roz tell my daughter she had a little sister. And my 4y/o asks"Is she brown?" I could tell that she got the right answer cuz my dd face light up like a Christmas tree. I was crying so hard. My Dad couldn't believe it all went so fast. My family reunion was at my house that year, and I was in a hotel in N.J. with my 2 girls waiting for the interstate compact to go through. My social worker in N.J. was wonderful. We ended up staying 10 days in a motel, so she cooked us dinner and let me use her washer to do the laundry. My 2nd daughter is now 7, and I added a set of twin boys, age 5 now a year ago. They were and are a roller coaster ride.
I am also single if I failed to mention that and am a nurse-midwife. My work had always been my life, but after the first baby came my way, my priorities changed. My twins have finally started to say "I love you too" when I put them to bed. They have gone from little heathens to 2 of the sweetest , lovingest boys around. Of course that's not to say they still don't have their moments. Every day is an adventure.
Good luck with your journey.
