forgive me as i've not visited in a while. had i seen this thread earlier i would have replied much earlier.
you see i am adopted and have always been told that i am from Amish background. i was adopted in Bucks county, PA at 6 days old. My birth certificate lists me as Pennsylvania Dutch. i wonder if we can collaberate? i am most interseted in this subject as you can imagine. Strangely, i do not want to contact my birth mother, especially if she is old school Amish. i couldn't disrupt her life. However, i do want to know everything about my birth parents and their culture and background. i also would love to know if their are many amish adoptions and why, you know? i would think it would be so unimaginabley hard. |

the amish do adopt as i am told...our agency has done some homestudies. i am curious to see if adoption rate goes up due to some amish communities having a higher incidence of genetically passed on ailments. there is a study going on, on this topic. it was recently discussed on npr and there is a hospital now working with the communtiy to study the genetics, as well as the amish working with the researchers.

The Amish DO adopt. In fact, they also have some homeschooling reading material that deals with transracial adoption as well. I've not been able to read this yet, but I know it's going to be available soon.
However, before this, a caseworker of ours back in the late '90's, told us that their agency was working with some Amish couples who were hoping to adopt. Sincerely, Linny |
