Okay friends, please help, my daughter begs this of you!

I've tried, really you must believe this to be true. But no matter what I do my poor little pipsqueak loses hair. I've tried every kind of pony tail holder for puffs (no I can't cornrow, that's another discussion). Everytime they come out, litlte hairs come out. Ouchless, the kind with balls, the soft fabric kind, all pony tail holders

When I brush her hair, hair comes out. I was using a big wide toothed goody brush.

When I wash her hair, hair comes out.

So this week, I started using this great conditioner from Pantene for women of color, I"m using the kind you rinse out in and then use the leave in one after we're out and before I do her hair. Lots of it. And as of yesterday I also stopped using the brush and using an oversized, large toothed comb. I"m also only washing her hair once a week.

Is this what others are doing?? I'm starting to worry I'm going to make my baby bald!

Hi,
I don't know what kind of wide tooth comb you are using, but we tried a real "rat tail" comb, and for some reason it does a fine job. Brushes seem to be hard on her hair.

Whats worked for us with bands is to us silicone (?) bands, don't put them in tight, and then cut them out.

The other thing we've done is to do 6-10 braids, no band at the base, or the end, and wrap the ends around a barrette.

I use Pantene shampoo and conditioner. I comb through it while the conditioner is in her hair and after her bath apply Just for Me hairdress/scalp conditioner. I wash once a week only. I use PCBs detangler/conditioner(walmart) on off days and then put in Just for Me hairdress/scalp conditioner (walmart)and use a VERY wide tooth comb and comb through. I take a small section and start combing from the bottom up. If I hit a snag I pull out the comb and start again until the tangle works it's way up to the top and undoes. This atkes about 25-30 min. I too use the Black silicone bands(found at walmart in the hair section) and cut them out in the evening when I use them (1-2 times/month). I usually just leave her hair in her afro, twisting her bang area over and putting in a barrette as in her picture. Now sometimes some hair does come out, but not too much, I was told it was normal.

so do you all take puffs out each night or leave them in for a day or 2?

Tracy, how do you get your daughter's afro so full? Hannah's hair is very multi-length - even without the breakage, the sides and front/top were slow to grow in, so those areas are only maybe 2 iinches while the rest maybe or 7 - uncoiled, she has pretty tight curls.

I'm gonna jump in here. With both of the girls---it's not unusual for a little bit of hair to come out when I comb. But, maybe I'm just different, but I take down their hair every day (well, 99% of the time), spritz it wet with water, apply the biosilk and comb it through. I find that most parents don't do this every day....but rather wait several days before working with their child's hair again.
I realize it's more work, but I can't stand to see even the nicest style get 'wooly' looking after a couple of days, KWIM? Might not bother some, but to me, it just looks too unkept.

And while this means more work, it also means that their hair stays conditioned....or at least that's what it seems.

I take them out the same night that I put them in. I condition her hair every day too. I can't stand that dry look, it just looks unhealthy to me. I have to do her hair eveyday or the next time I do it she will cry from tangles. Even if she is sick, I will atleast spray the detangler in, put in her hairdress and run my fingers through it instead of combing.

Jos, her hair is different lengths too. After I comb through it daily, I then use the three tooth pick to lift it all and shape it to be even.

okay - this is all good information -- I haven't been wetting it before putting in the leave-in conditioner - or using detangler -- I haven't heard of PCB detanger, and we dont' have a Walmart here, other detanglers you recommend? And thanks for the info. This week I've been just adding the Pantene leave-in conditioner in the morning and combing it out, not puting in any puffs or anything. I don't think it looks as cute, but I'd rather her not go bald. I'll try using the pic to refluff it, but after I put in the leave -in conditioner it's too wet and heavy to fluff I think

Carol's daughter makes some very good products. I use their shampoo on Samantha who is biracial but Italian/black with VERY THICK and long hair. It smells wonderful and doesn't get much foam but really does a good job. I think it's about $12 a bottle. I also use the hair butter on her hair to condition it at the scalp (and through the ends if I twist it) and it looks great. If someone wants to tell me how to attach a photo of Samantha I'll do that. I have a nice one of her hair blown out and hot combed but I try not to do that often because of breakage. As far as hair coming out, I lose hair too. I don't think it's normal for some hair to come out in the brush. Isn't it??

I like carol's daughter but my daughter is allergic to soy and after using that she was back at the ped. allergist because it had such a severe effect on her. Stupid me didn't read the ingredients. That will never happen again. Luckily she didn't need her epi that time.

Just wanted to report back that it's been a better week, just using the comb and gobs of the Pantene leave-in conditioner. Still not using a detanlger, the only one I can find in town is like Suave which I doubt would do much to Hannah's hair. But I only did puffs once this week, experimenting with more down styles, she doesn't look as cute I think, but we'll keep working at it. I feel like she wasn't losing as much hair though and that's most important to me.
