Zulu Knots

Okay, looking for guidance on Hannah's knots. her hair is very multi-length -- long on top and back, but short on front/crown and front sides - took forever for those areas to grow in. So as a result her afro-puffs right now look really scraggly so I'm really unhappy with them. She's only 21 months and not up to sitting for a lot of hair-doing, so I tried knots again this mroning, and they don't look too shabby. They aren't all perfectly coiled like I've seen. So if any of you experienced moms will read what I've done and tell me if I missed something or if i'm right on for a toddler:

parted hair, 1-2 inch blocks
each block parted in two and twisted until it wrapped into itself
tucked end underneath if I could.

her hair at the longest uncliled is about 7 inches, the front/sides are about 1 1/2 inches

Cannot figure out what to do now that her puffs are so weak looking.

Any help is appreciated.

jo

Thanks Jo. I'd never heard of this, nor tried it, but I'm planning to. (Shows where I'm at, huh?!)

Thanks for posting about this. I'm always looking for something where I don't have to make them sit for long times, or have to put up with painful styles...because I simply won't make them think that to be beautiful, they have to hurt!!!

Sincerely,

Linny

I just did Zulu knots recently. I got them all over her head. The pic does no justice for what they really looked like though. I twisted each strand then twisted together, not sure if that makes a difference or not. Here is the top view, I can't put it in because the file is too big so here is the link http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...mmel/zulu2.jpg

Tracy, I'll try the twisting first the twisting together today when Hannah naps. My result yesterday is that the twists stayed twisted but definitely uncoiled - sort of had a Medusa effect going on. Her hair is so fine that I don't want to rubber band the coils or even anchor them with a clip, but perhaps the pre-twisting will help. I'll shoot a pic later.

This is definitely supposed to be the least pulling of hairdos at this age.

Tracey:
Thanks for the photos. They do help, but I haven't had the time to try this yet on either of the girls. I've said before that your daughter is a cutie, but had to write this time to say that the photo of you and your daughter is so nice!

Sincerely,

Linny

Thanks Linny. All she wants to do is ride in the sling these days. She rides in it all the time when we shop, but all of a sudden she wants to ride in the house too. I don't mind except when I have to cook because it isn't safe.

I just got on a site this morning called "motowngirl" and it was very good about explaining how to do different styles. My daughter has very long, thick hair and I would like to do twists, but make them very narrow so they look more like strands of hair. I'm going to try it tonite although I know I'll be doing this in part I, part II and part III because Samantha has TONS OF HAIR. She's dancing this weekend in a Gospel concert and I'd like her to look special. Wish me luck!! Anyway, try the site. I thought it was quite helpful.

I just did Zulu knots on my 3 month old daughter today. The afro was just TOO BIG. I really liked them on her. I do need to practice, but I liked seeing how the rest of you did them.......
