Too soon to potty train?
B is almost 20 months old. For the past two weeks whenever he wets his diaper he comes to me and does the sign language sign for potty. Well, this morning he actually pulled his pants down and did the sign for potty. Sure enough, he had pooped.
B has always been ahead of the curve so I'm wondering if he might be ready to try sitting on the potty. I have a general rule in my daycare contract that a child must be at least 2 years old to start potty training and I have found that generally boys aren't really ready to begin potty training until they're close to three years old. I've never had a 20 month old in the 6 years I've been working with kids who might be ready for the potty. I'm going to ask his parents what they think later tonight when they come to pick him up but I wanted some opinions on whether I should bend my own rule and try putting B on the potty. Thanks!

Obviously follow the parents lead but I would say the little fellow is ready. My DD started potty training @ 18mo and she was ready. I wasn't :-)
My multi handicapped brother actually potty trained b4 3 as well while the Dr's were saying not to because he wasn't verbal or walking on his own!... Just my 2 cents. |

Parker is 16 months and sits on the potty everyday. He thinks it's great fun.
We have the Potty Training Sign Language DVD. Good stuff. ![]()

I've started holding my FD over the potty every night, which she enjoys bc it's a change of scenery for her. I make this shushing sound in hopes of her going, and we're done after a few minutes, or whenever she gets cranky, whichever comes first. I don't expect her to (she's only 7 months!), but I don't think it hurts to introduce her to the concept and have her associate good things with the big potty.
Well, imagine my utter surprise last night when she actually went #2 straight into the potty! Various cultures consider children ready at different ages, so I'd say it doesn't hurt to try, as long as it's not something you expect them to get right away or if it turns into something unpleasant for either of you. That's my 2 cents. ![]()

Our DS started sitting on the potty at 18 months when he started telling us that he had pooped in his diaper. He turned 2 last month and we are now using a potty seat on the toilet and a stool for him to stand on. When we are at home, he wears training underwear. Pull-ups when we are out and at bed time. He has good days and not so good days. We just keep working with him (and try to be patient). He'll get there...
His new daycare had a potty training workshop for parents at which the facilitator gave tips/techniques for potty training in one day using a "potty party" method. We have yet to try it & I'm wondering if anyone on the board has actually tried potty training their child in one day.
