Why? Why? Why? WHY? WHY? WHYYYY?!

And it has happened.

Nick entered the why phase.

He has previously asked why, of course. But just this week EVERYTHING that we say is met with, "WHY?" Of course, the first set caught me so off guard that I replied with, "Because I said so."

It turns out, and I've just learned this four days into the phase, that if we respond with a lengthy, gentle but authoritative-sounding answer, he responds with, "Oh! Right!"

Example:

Me: Please finish your sandwich.
Nick: Why?
Me: Well, you want to grow big and strong, don't you? And to grow big and strong, you have to have enough food in your belly. It has something to do with caloric intake and (I went on and on here).
Nick: Oh! Right! *eats sandwich*

So. How long until this passes?

If you are lucky he will continue to ask why until he has it all figured out. Then sadly they don't need us anymore, they become teenagers and know it all!

OMG! I think it may be starting for me too. DD has been more into the question "What's that?" before now. But just this morning it was ALL "why?" Over and over and over and over and over. I'll try the long answer approach . . . .

Of course my 17 month old is just revving up in the "What's that?" department. What oh what have I gotten myself into? LOL!!

I'm evil

With kids of around 3.5 or so that do the 'why' thing, I launch into a 'Who's On First' routine that would make Abbot and Costello proud.

It amuses me, and the kids find something else to do than ask 'why' over and over and over again.

Daniel is 13. It has not stopped yet. And it is getting harder to answer the questions. Tonight... "Do you know what religion the Nazis believed in?" He's big on history.

My son started asking why just before he turned three. The simple "Because I said so" does not work. He wants a very detailed explanation (his teacher tells me he is very bright). I really think by the time he is four, he will know more than me Lol. My daughter got tired of him asking one day and said, "Because God says so!" He was happy with that one for a while, but no longer. This is coming from a child who when my husband said, "If they lose the game I will cry." Then, my son says, "If I lose, I fail." What they come up with.

My friends son R just started it and we turn it into a game. Well, I do. I don't know what she does but it becomes the old Abbott and Costello thing.

"Why"
"Who" me
"Why"
"Where"

"ball" him
