Developing Into A Picky Eater?
I "prided" myself on the fact that my DD would eat ANYTHING, and especially loved veggies! Lately, though (since she has begun to talk more), she will take food that she always liked, chew it and then spit it out. I also hear a constant barrage of "I want chip please" (of course, it doesn't sound that good, but I know what she is saying!). I know I have probably made a mistake of giving her an occasional chip, cookie, etc. but now it seems, she only wants junk food. Has this happened to anyone else around this age (she is 19 mos). TIA~

We are right there with you. Kelcee will eat something one day and the next no way! I am now making sure nothing is on the counter so she thinks she wants that stuff. I try to make sure that I am not really feeding her to many snacks in between meals so she is hungry at mealtime and will eat almost anything I give her. She is 20 months and I think this is normal for them to go through also.

We're starting to have a little of the pickiness, but it's not consistent---he'll decide he likes the broccoli or whatever again at the next meal. We haven't had too much problem w/ the junk food yet. If he wants something for a snack, it's usually his wheat crackers, "Os", apple pieces or string cheese---those are pretty much the only offerings available.
I'll give him one of his snacks if we are having something (like chips) but we aren't big snackers, so it's not been a huge issue. I am chalking his occasional pickiness up to some newfound independence. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!) |

It's absolutely normal for children to do this...love something one day and hate it the next. I, too, chalk it up to asserting their independence. My daughters (now age 5 1/2) will still do it. Last night, I served salmon for dinner...both girls said "we don't like salmon, Mom!" and they've been eating it since they were very small. I just let it slide until they starting eating and scarfed it right now. S kept saying "this is really good, Mom!"
I feel they just like to have some control - even the little ones! - and if you consistently offer good food, they're going to eat. An occasional treat is fine (and my daughters LOVE junk food) but the overall nutrition is there.
