Adoptee Born Same Year as Supreme Court Nominee,Greatful Life Was the Law in 1955
Last evening I intently watched the CNN news coverage on the announcement of the Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts. I was saddened over hearing the outspoken opinions and concern of many politicians and pundits that Roe vs Wade be preserved, protected.
How many millions of innocent lives have been thoughtlessly snuffed out and fallen victim to this law that has leaned totally on the side of the right of a woman to her body but ignored the innocent voiceless precious life growing with promise within her. In 1955, I was one of those innocent unborn babes who had no voice. But Life was the law then and protected me and advocated for the right for me to be born 2 months premature. It would not have protected me today were I conceived in this era of abortion rights and woman's choice. Oh how grateful I am that I was born in January 1955, the same year Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts was born. I was conceived in the previous year by an inner city Milwaukee couple who struggled with alcoholism, poverty, a marriage on the rocks and too many mouths to feed. My birth parents faced an unexpected, unwelcome and fragile pregnancy because my 32 year old mother was diagnosed with cervical cancer and a communicable disease. Today these are all valid reasons presented in defense of the right to abort. But my birth parents, even in my mother's fragile state, chose to follow the law and give me the Gift of Life and placed me for adoption. An answer to my adoptive parent's passionate prayers for a child. My birth mother survived her life-threatening condition through the delivery and I was the fruit of her labor. Shouldn't we now be asking the question, who has Roe vs Wade been protecting and who has it ignored in the name of Choice? Choice for the mother or the voiceless babe waiting with promise inside her? Who now will advocate for those innocent lives who cannot speak for themselves and were abandoned to be voiceless with no law to advocate for them when Roe vs Wade became the Law?
