Red face need help in stepparent adoption

I am needing help on how to start adoption process. My children are 12 and soon to be 10 in July and I have been with my husband for nine years and they have not seen their bf in over 5 years. I don't know how to locate him or any relatives. My daughters are wanting the same last name that I have along with a son I have by my husband and we have another child due in December. I live in Dallas County and I have contacted several attorneys and they are charging $3000-$5000. Can I file with the courts on my own? If so.. does anyone know how to begin the process?

You need to terminate his rights first. How long has it been since the father has made any attempt at contact? If you know he won't contest it you can probably serve him with termination papers. If he signs then it should be smooth sailing for you.

I'm in Collin County and we had to actually serve my ex papers.

Wow. Thanks for all the info, centraltx dad. This really helps. In my case, the bf said he would sign but has yet to do so and it has been months. My boys have not seen or heard from him in 7 years. No child support either. He is a real piece of "work".
