Step parent adoption
I too would like to adopt my "step" son-hate that word! He is 18 months old, his biological mom died when he was 5 months old. Can anyone help me out here or direct me to websites. I would like to try and do this on my own without going through a lawyer. Thanks! My email is halismom@gmail.com

I want to adopt my step-daughter.
Hello,
My wife and I got married this year and I want to adopt my step-daughter. She is only 4 years old and we want to change her name before she gets older. I sent an email to 6 different coordinators for Harris county family courts judges and every single one of them told me to consult with an attorney. Despite the fact that I am way above the poverty level (which is ridiculously low by the way), we cannot afford $1000+ for an attorney. Every government agency I have contacted here in Houston has told me to hire a lawyer and that they cannot help and that there are no forms to provide. Can someone help me and send me the forms please or give me a brief description of the process? Thanks |

Even doing the adoption yourself it will still cost $1000. If you used a lawyer it would cost closer to 5g's. The filing fees are around $260 (varies by county), the home study is around $650, the fingerprinting is around $30 plus notary fees if you can't find one for free. And this is ONLY if there is NO termination of parental rights (other parent died). Otherwise you will have additional fees for getting parental rights terminated.. even if the other parent is willingly signing over rights.... you will most likly need an attorney.. good luck.. |

It's relatively simple, just time consuming.
I can forward the information to you if you would like. I know I've already sent you the info on the relinquishment. Let me know if you would like the rest of it. I'm in Texas also and I did the adoption paperwork for my husband to adopt my sons.
