Hello Jen,
I'm in Harris County and I am trying to find the forms for a step parent adoption and for terminating custodial father's rights. My ex is in Tennessee and has not seen nor paid support in several years. We are looking to do this pro se, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Roxanna

Question Really Confusing Case

Hello, my husband really wants to adopt my son, from a previous (non marital) relationship.....my son's biological father left when I was 3 months pregnant and has only seen him once....however he is actually trying to establish paternity...he has not provided for any of the babys care, but my husband has....he is only doing this to get even with me for what happened when we split up......my husband is the only "daddy" my son has ever known....even though he is only 5 months old....is there any way the courts would consider the fact that my husband has a emotional bond with the baby and reverse.....the only time my son saw his BF he cried....also previous to my son being born his BF threatened to take him from me if he ever got his hands on him....referring to kidnapping him from me...however there were no witnesses to this....i know this all sounds confusing....any help making sense of what to do would be greatly appreciated

Hi

My husband & I have started the process ourselves & we have been lucky that the cost hasn't been as much as I was expecting. Once we filed the paperwork we had to see the lawyer at the court house & she consulted use on what else we needed to do. I have everything still but The Order Appointing Investigator for our Social Study. The lawyer at the court house gave us a list of Court approved social studies & there cost that was in our area. I called them & once they called back they would tell us what they expected from us. We chose one & now that is our last step. I hope I have been able to help.

Request help

I am an adult and my mother and step father divorced when I was 17. I would like my step-dad the only real dad I've ever known to adopt me and so would he like to adopt me. I know very little about family law. I was hoping for several things. 1) does he still have to get the finger card printing done? 2) I would like a Petition to file ProSe w/ the Ct. in Tarrant County, TX 3) Will I still be allowed to get my Birth record changed to reflect that name of the dad that really wanted and loved me? My email is Melissa@coxlegal.com Thank you very much for your help.

Stepparent adoption

Jen, I have all of the forms and am ready to file the petition tomorrow. How does the Judge decide if a home study is needed? I also need the address for DPS to send the fingerprint stuff, and the Vital Statistics form for birth certificate change.

And for everyone else, I simply called the Collin County Law Library and asked for the packet for stepparent adoption, and she emailed it to me immediately. Forms, instructions, etc. All you do is fill in the blanks for whatever County you are in.

Once all of these are completed you will then go to your district clerk's office and file your paperwork. This usually costs approximately $150 - $200 depending on your county. Once this is completed you can then go to your local police department and ask them if they could fingerprint you for an adoption. They may charge you a couple of $$$ for doing this. Once you have that completed you will then need to send it to the Texas DPS. I can give you the address for them also. Send them a letter along with the fingerprint card giving them permission to do a background check and where to send the results when they are done. Send $15 along with it for processing fees. You will know what court your case is assigned to when you file your paperwork. Take a couple of copies of the petition and stuff so they can file stamp your copies. Once you find out what court your case is assigned to you can then contact the court clerk for that court and ask if the judge will require a social study for a step-parent adoption since the state of Texas doesn't require one for step-parent adoptions. If the judge requires one you will need to go in front of the judge and have him/her assign a counselor to do this. You will then need to contact that person and set a time to have your social study completed. Once the fingerprint results are back and only if you are required to have a social study those results are sent in you can then go to court. You might need to set a court date, but a lot of courts if it's not contested they have a specific time during the week that you just show up and the judge will hear your case. If I can be of further assistance let me know. I also have the form to send to the Bureau of Vital Statistics to have the birth certificate amended.

Good luck and best of wishes!
Could you please send me the forms as well? Thank you

yes, absolutely, danamom on this website has all of the paperwork. My husband just adopted my son with the paperwork from her. fill out the petition and send it to your district court, you will need a social visit done through famiy services, after that is done, fill out the order to adopt, and go int front of the judge, it took us about 4 months to do on our own and under $1000. Good luck
