Texas Adoption Law
from http://www.weblocator.com/attorney/tx/law/c08.html
Any adult in Texas may file a petition to adopt a child. Commonly, married couples apply to become adoptive parents, although single, separated, and divorced people have the right to adopt in Texas. Married people must adopt together, however; one spouse may not seek to adopt a child without the consent and joint petition of the other spouse. There is no particular age, housing situation, social background, or income level that makes certain people more qualified to be adoptive parents than others. It is prohibited by Texas law to discriminate against a person in an adoption because of his or her race or ethnicity, or to deny a person the right to adopt a particular child for these reasons. Some people may be required to provide additional information to an agency considering their application. For instance, working parents might be required to demonstrate how child care will be provided. The Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services provides various services to people wishing to adopt, including adoption placement. |

Marquita,
Why do you want to adopt at such a young age? You have so much to learn about life, a living to be made, a foundation to establish, and a level of maturity to be established before you can become a good parent. From this and your previous postings, it is apparent that you have not received a level of education which might enable you to make a good living and give your children advantages you may not have had. You owe this to yourself - You are worth it! Plus, agencies may be hesitant to take someone who cannot satisfactorily complete the REAMS of paperwork required to have an approved home study. At 20 years old, you should focus on your education and working to find fulfillment within yourself. Once you have gotten an education, established a career, and maybe even gotten some therapy to establish why you want to adopt, THEN you should look into adoption. By that time, you may even have decided to have your family in a different way. I wish you well, and hope that you will give yourself the wonderful gift of taking this time in your life to make a major impact on the rest of it. |
