Help New Foster Mom?
I need to know if physical exams or a letter of good health from your doctor was required by CPS in order to become foster parents in the state of Texas???
I'm in my early 40's, on SSDI for medical disability. I take 13 medications daily to get through the day. However, all my illnesses have stabilized enough to where I know I could take care of say.. a 6-12 yr old child in good health. I cook, clean and do everything everyone else can do, but I have to take rest breaks in between (the kind employers won't give you). I was never able to have children of my own and I just love them! I feel it would be much more beneficial for them to be here in my home where they are safe, warm, fed, clothed and loved.. than in a place where they are being harmed. I lost my husband of 18 yrs a few yrs ago (in a very violent and unexpected way) and my grief counselor (a licensed psychologist who works with CPS kids) HIGHLY recommended that I apply for foster parenting. I have spent 2 years with this counselor. I bought a home in a rural area shortly after my husband passed away. My little town has 3 schools (elementary, middle, high school) all within a few blocks from my lovely little home. So, if you are currently a foster parent in the state of Tx, please let me know if they required you to have your doctor fill out a form stating that you were in "good health" before allowing you to foster. I'm in Texas. Sounds like you live in my town! We are licensed through an agency and our agency had a paper the dr had to fill out stating that we were up to date on our shots and were in good health and able to care for children. Good health just means that you don't have a terminal illness. There are lots of foster parents that take many medications, have illnesses that are controlled through medication or are in similar situations as yours. It speaks highly of you that your counselor has suggested you apply to be a foster parent. Don't let the "what if's" keep you from making the first step and finding out about becoming licensed. Good luck with your journey.

You not only have to provide a letter to get licensed, but submit one annually - at least w/ my agency in TX.
If you can't get a foster care license you may want to consider volunteering - it's not a full time 24/7 commitment & I don't think you need an MD note just a background check. You sound like you have a lot to give! |

Thank you both so much for your replies. I have too much to give to just throw it away. A saw a little girl in a truck yesterday waving at me - she turned all the way around in her seat to smile and wave at me all the way to the next town..I had the biggest smile. I am now going to go forward with my quest in foster parenting.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner but sounds like you made your decision. That is Awesome news! Congratulations on your decision.
Like you, I am single and over 40. I would encourage you to line up your Respite providers in advance. You are going to need a break from time to time. My agency also requires a statement from my physician (as pp's stated). By the way, they will also ask for a list of the medicines you are taking. Of course they will want them locked up. All medicines (prescription and over the counter) must be locked up. Welcome to the Fostering World! Some child/children will be lucky to have you as their FM. |

I'm in TX, and we were only required to submit for TB test. We weren't required to have a physical.
I'm glad you're going forward with your decision. The ages you listed are in need a good loving homes. Keep us posted on your status!
