New from Alaska.

From one large state to another. 8)

I am totaly new to to the adoption idea but I know this is somthing I want to do. I am looking at an older-child adoption and a number of them are in Texas. At least the ones that I feel comfortable being able to care for. What kinds of cross state considerations should I know about?

I am not new to special need children but I am not equipt to take on any that cant at least function on their own for short amounts of time. Like take a bus or the like. I want to keep most options open but I like the idea of helping the ones in foster care first.

Thanks in advance for you advice.

Hi! I don't know much about Interstate adoption, I believe you start the process in your home state, and then work with the photo listings. THe texas listing is TARE, and has many children who are available for adoption, who have mild or more special needs. My daughter was on the photo listing, and she can certainly function on her own, she's just about a year behind academically. Now she's the child of a teacher....so there you go. Contact DCFS or CPS in Alaska and let them know you are interested in adopting through the state. You might throw out a causal interest in ICPC, to feel the water. I understand that some states are not excited about doing interstate (ICPC) because the children of Alaska will be thier priority. They may even tell you they "don't or can't" do that. They can and are required by law to do so (according to my caseworker). However if you work with a private agency: make sure they DO before you sign up. Once you are licensed as an adpotive parent: FIND your child in the photo listings! Good Luck!
