Adopting from out of state??? (We live in TX)
Hi. I'm new here & have a couple questions.
I'm licensed the TX DFPS for adopt only... can we adopt a child from out of state??? I've seen several children from other states free for adoption but my CW says we have to adopt from TX, only. I thought once we were licensed we could adopt anywhere. I don't want to limit ourselves... especially since we're looking for 1-2 children, under the age of 8 (preferably caucausian)... which will probably take a while if we have to wait for a child(ren) to become available here. Also, yesterday our CW emailed a sibling group that fit the ages, but were Hispanic and we told her to go ahead & submit the homestudy. How long before we hear anything? Do we keep looking? Any advice for someone who is new to this waiting game, would be appreciated! THANK YOU! |

The rules might have changed. Someone else might have more information. I know we were licensed straight adopt with DFPS and we were put in for children out of state, although we mostly stayed in state and what was available on TARE. How long to wait, that is always the ultimate question. Technically I was told you must wait at least 45 days from the day you submit your homestudy. But there really is no time limit as I learned as time went on. Things happen to the cases all the time and sometimes they are put on hold, sometimes they wait for more homestudies to come in, you just never know.
The group we were chosen for we submitted our homestudy on Nov 20th and the RAS was January 15th to give you an idea. The RAS was the 4 way meeting where they choose a family. I do know that DFPS is now a child placing agency and the rules have changed. I wasn't really concerned listening to all the particulars as my cw was explaining her new roles as we are already into pre-placement, but things are definitely different now. As for out-of-state I'm not sure why your cw is saying this. You should ask them and find out, there has to be some reason. Anyhow keep looking and keep submitting. Don't get your hopes up for any one particular group unless you find out that you are going to a selection meeting. We submitted on about 60 groups before we were selected. The first time we were selected it was the first group we submitted our homestudy on, so there you go! |

Another TX Family...
We too are in Texas and I agree with TCTAHOE - time depends on kids - we have been licensed for two years and have had three different situations presented and each have been very different.
Our CW submitted on our behalf a child in CA that we requested - so I know although they don't like to go out of state, they will. |
