clear across the state

Well I have a small issue they just don't have to deal with in states like New Jersey.....

I live in Houston.

The girls I am currently being considered for live in Amarillo.

Anybody adopted so far away before? Whats the visitation look like for something like this?

I could fly up a couple of times, and drive up 1 or to bring them home maybe.......

of course really I'd do whatever it takes to bring the girls home, I'm just wondering what DCFS will expect.

Thanks!

I know there are a couple members on here that have had the same dilemma. One lived in Lubbock and the kids were here in Houston. What happened for them was like 2 visits and then the kids were flown up to them. I do know with longer trips such as yours that the visitations have to be more in line than they are for like me who lives in Houston and the kids are in Houston! For us it's been 2.5 months of visitations.

But I do know they had to drive to Houston once or twice of course the first time to meet and greet and then another time for overnight visits but they usually work that into the first few weeks. It probably also depends on the kids and ages etc. Hers were older children. 8-10 yo.

I have thought about that too... we are also in Houston and alot of the kids I have seen on various sites are no where near us. I would be curious to find out how this is planned! Good luck!

We drove quite a bit through Texas last week and it is a long drive. We got stuck in that slow traffic between Austin and Dallas on the way home.

Good luck with your placement. Keep us updated!

I am the one from Lubbock that is adopting 2 boys from the Houston area. How it worked for us was we drove to Houston for the initial meeting. Had the boys for the weekend. Then the following weekend they flew to Lubbock to spend the weekend and the next weekend they came to us FOREVER!! By the way our court date is July 6 and the boys and our family are way too excited.

Let me warn you though every region works a little differently. However the summer is the perfect time to make the placements so there is time to adjust before school starts.

Thanks Connie-
I hope it all works out. DCFS is being painfully slow in the process of choosing a family.
I'm so glad it is going great for your family!
Congrats!

Hey folks....

We are also in the Houston area. We are hopefully reviewing a file Friday for a potential adoption of a young girl. This will be our first child so I'm not sure what to expect yet but thought I'd chime in. The child is not in Houston, so I will keep you updated on how the visits/etc work for us.
