SSI & Foster care/parent stipend?
I have a friend who asked me if foster kids are eligible for SSI, so FP's receive that and their foster parent stipend?
Are both used to support/raise that child/ren? Do those fp's receive that SSI? or who does? thanks!

I had a child that was receiving SSI before she came into care. The CW said that the state would then get the SSI and use it as a reimbursement to the state for the money it spends for the stipend. Doesn't sound right to me, but that is what they do in Texas. I think the child should get that money no matter what the circumstances particularly when that money can be used to provide things the state doesn't cover that a child in that situation might need.

In MA foster parents do not recieve any SSI money. It is put into a seperate fund for the state to use on "extras" for that child... video games, camps, programs etc. They are also required to actively be using some of the money so it is not just sitting there.

The state of Texas uses SSI/RSDI funds towards cost of care. It's actually what SSA requires. So, for foster parents and agencies, the amount of state paid funds is reduced by the SSI/RSDI amount, then the SSI/RSDI is sent seperately.
(Lump Sums though are handled a bit differently.) |
