Does your Adopted child get Medicaid? PLUS Guardianship vs Adoption
I don't live in Texas but in our state, any child that is Adopted through Social Services can get Medicaid. I need to know.....Is it that way in TX??
Can anyone explain the difference between Guardianship and Adoption in Tx for me. I want all the information I can get on this subject. THANKS! |

We live in KS, but adopted in TX. Our son got Medicaid, but we had to have it transfered to our state as noone here would accecpt a TX medicaid card. I will say that I believe that they are elegible if the paperwork states that they are classified as a section I-VE.

In Texas in order for a child to qualify for any subsidy: they must be over the age of six, a sibling group or a special needs child. There are other stipulations but I can't find my codes at the moment. (It's been a loooong day!) When I find them I'll put them on here if needed.
The difference between adoption & guardianship is: In a guardianship, that is all you are is the guardian. As a foster parent I am the child's guardian but CPS is the managing conservator. Everything goes through them. I take care of them but I don't make life decisions for them. I can't even take them on vacation without prior approval. If we have a hurricane and have to evacuate, I have to have an approved emergency preparedness plan on file so we can leave our county. When they are adopted it's not needed. You are everything to the child, parent, guardian, the big kahuna. You make all the decisions because they are your children. Hope this helps! |

Timberkit covered about all of it.
The only comment I have is about medicaid. Each state has their own (or something like that). My step-daughter is from Iowa (and why she is on medicaid when we provide her medical insurance is beyond me). She needed some meds refilled while down here this summer and Texas would not fill them (good thing I did have her on our med coverage so I just paid our co-pay). We were informed about the each state doing it's own then. I'll still add our 3 foster kids to our med insurance after the adoption, just in case something needs to be done right away, or medicaid won't cover (it can happen). Hope all that helps.
