We just started our process and was hoping I could find someone who could give me some advice on the Home Study. What is it all about? What are they looking for? Can I do anything in preparation?

The home study depends on the agency you go with. If you are adopting through the state, the information is on the same site as all of the foster care/adoption info. TDPRS, I believe. Basically, the agencies want to see that you have safe facilities for children, beds, dressers, etc. Some agencies require a fire inspection by the local fire marshall. More importantly, they want to interview you and your spouse in your own environment. There are three separate interviews, one independent of each other and then together. It's a lot of paperwork for the case worker. They put together a whole lot of information for you. Also, they will ask very personal questions, so be ready. The thing is, it's not to put you on the spot, as much to figure out a lot about you so that they can do a good match with the children they have available. Hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you dowlik so much for the info. We are adopting internationally, Guatemala specifically and have just started the process. My husband and I are anxious and want this to go as quickly and smoothly as possible. We looked at the state program, but my husband didn't want an older child. I have to respect that. Anyway, thanks for your help.
