step son
I married my husband 2 years ago. He has full custody of his son from his previous marriage. The Biological mother has had no contact with our son since 1999, although she wrote a couple of letters in 2000. Since our son was 3 in 1999, he remembers very little of his bio-mom.
I would like to adopt my step son, so that if anything ever happens to my husband, I have a legal leg to stand on. But I have no clue where to start. Does the bio-mom need to give up parental rights? Do I have to confront her with that, or can I simply place an ad in the paper? Does anyone know of a laywer who can get me started on the right path to adoption?
